Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"At last, someone has provided parents with a fun-filled, non-threatening approach to help children who hold in their bowel movements. Dr. Bennett's book will be a permanent fixture in my waiting room." --Benny Kerzner, M.D., Chairman, Department of Gastroenterology, Children's National Medical Center

"Every child with toilet training trouble should see this book!" -Allison Schonwald, M.D., Pediatrician, Harvard Medical School, Author of the Pocket Idiot's Guide to Potty Training Problems

"It Hurts When I Poop! is a wonderful book. My daughter runs a little show, digestion-wise, and is prone to tummy aches when she holds everything in. Dr. Bennett's story provided her with knowledge about her body, confidence in her intelligence, and a plan to remedy the situation. I heartily recommend Dr. Benntt's smart, playful treatment of a frustrating problem." -Mary Kay Zuravleff, Author of The Bowl is Already Broken

"This is a terrific book that will help children overcome the fears they experience while using the potty. I highly recommend this book and think it will be enthusiastically received by parents and children alike." -Teri Crane, Author of Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day: Proven Secrets of the Potty Pro --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars It hurts when I poop January 28, 2008
Format:Hardcover
My daughter has had a poo poo problem for three years and FINALLY!!!!.....I purchased the book and from the first time I read it to her she started to relate to Ryan. She wanted me to read her the book at least five times a night and when she was on the toilet. People don't understand the late nights crying on the toilet for three hours at a time unless they have been through something like this. My daughter was in pain every day and Ryan has the exact symptoms as my daughter had. I really wanted to thank the author of this book. I also purchased one for my daughters doctor. If your child has this problem please buy this book it really has done wonders for my daughter and the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars It hurts when I poop December 2, 2007
Format:Hardcover
When you have been through 2 years of poop problems, and not knowing what else to do, this book is the answer. It describes perfectly how my daughter felt, it was if she wrote it. I love this book, it is her favorite book. Some tomes we don't talk about these kind of this because we are ashamed, but now with this book it is easy to help in this matter. I am so thankful I found this book, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thankful and Encouraged April 4, 2008
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book provided more progress for us in 1 week than anything else did in almost 2 years! Our daughter is almost 4 and has dealt with "withholding issues" for almost 2 years since being constipated once when she was two. We got this book last week for her and she has actually pooped in the potty 5 times now for the first time in her life! For the last 2 years she has been on the prescription stool softener MiraLAX which has prevented further constipation but never caused her to stop being afraid of letting her BM's out. She has been almost deathly afraid of pooping in her pull-up and even more so in the potty. We tried everything and became so frustrated with seeing our precious girl go through such self-induced agony as she held her BM's in on a daily basis. I felt hopeless in being able to reach her ... but thankfully, Ryan did, the little boy character in this book. She related instantly to him as he went through the same agony as she did. As Ryan learned through a story from his doctor followed by a little anatomy lesson, our daughter learned. It seemed to ease her tension almost immediately. By the third day of reading the book (several times a day), she wanted to sit on her potty and give it a try. She was successful the first time and has since been successful almost each day. I can't tell you the relief and pride that she has in herself now and of course her parents too. I highly recommend this book for any child who is fearful of letting out his/her poop. I hope it works out as well for others as it did for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book for explaining the potty process especially poop. It includes a lot of detail that may go over a child's head.

2.0 out of 5 stars Book: Not What I Hoped. Included: Natural Way to Soften Stools
This book is OK but too wordy for a lot of younger kids, the story in the middle was too unrelated for younger kids, and the kid doesn't even successfully go at the end. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing plot.
Plot diverges into the most random story ever. I don't mean whimsical. I mean- confusing for a toddler. She got bored fast. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Its okay
The book entertained, but I am not sure it touched on the issue that my son was having. It assumes that all kids that wont use the potty must have had a painful poop. Read more
