Book Description

Game of Thrones: Season One

Just how good – or how bad – is Game of Thrones’s production values? Its cinematography or visual effects? Its adaptation from the original book? How have the storylines been changed, and how can one simple prop forever alter a character arc?

There has been much critical feedback on HBO’s new flagship series, but few (serious) pieces of journalism have gone to the depth that Marc N. Kleinhenz’s column for Corona Coming Attractions routinely does – and even fewer have examined both the television and literary sides of the coin. It Is Known: An Analysis of Thrones, Volume I is an authoritative examination of George R.R. Martin’s creation, in all its flavors.

What makes this ebook an indispensable companion piece to the television series is the inclusion of all of Kleinhenz’s columns, roundtable discussions with the biggest names in the Game of Thrones community – including Elio García and Time magazine’s James Poniewozik – and an original essay exclusive to this collection. Best of all, there are no spoilers for future episodes or books, making it a safe read for all fans.

This really is a "companion" to both the books and the HBO series. As, first and foremost, a reader, I was apprehensive about trying to compare the two, but Marc really gets it right. This book compares each episode with it's counterpart in the book, tells of the differences and how they improve on or cut short the HBO version. There are technical points of view that I had never thought of. Not being in the industry I tend to gloss over the whys and hows of production and just expect them (the producers) to "pull it off". Marc shows us some of those whys and hows and how the book had to be tweaked to accommodate for the show.

Another aspect of this book that I really liked and found very helpful was the character comparisons. Getting those characters that I know and love onto that small screen was my biggest fear. In the books, character development really drives the entire story, so getting the characters right on screen was very important to me. Marc does a superb job at identifying the differences and explaining if this helps or harms the overall plots. Also, I didn't think it was possible, but this book in no way spoils anything for the "watcher only". If the desire is there to find out how the show compares to the books without having to read them, this is the companion book for you. Good job Marc!

What a pleasure it was to read this book. I had my own theories and ideas about the story and how it would progress and what each little thing meant. This book refined some of my ideas, gave me new ones, and sometimes just blew them right out of Westeros!!! This author really has a talent for leading you to the provrbial water and not only suggesting you drink, but making you want to. If you are a serious George RR Martin/Game of Thrones/A Song of Fire and Ice Fan, than this is a great companion to the series. If you are a casual or teetering fan of the TV Series, READ THIS BOOK. You will learn a bit more about the novel side of the story and most likely take them up as well. Enjoy this book and I promise you will enjoy the tv series and the books themselves even more.

I'm a huge fan of the books, and I love to pick out and anticipate differences, slight and great, from the book to the television show as I watch the show. It's great to read Marc's companion piece, as not only does he talk about the differences, but he also discusses and theorizes why the differences occur. Obviously many are due to budget constraints, but there are certainly many other reasons as well. Marc is very conversational in his writing here, so when reading it really feels like you are just having a conversation with a fellow lover of the ASoIaF series. This is also great for those who have not read the books and want to find what sort of differences there are from page to screen. If you have seen the show but not read the books and intend to, reading this really isn't going to spoil much more than what the show has given you already. In fact, this analysis may in fact be helpful if you have seen the show and now. want to read the books. And as a rabid fan, I must say I do encourage you to read the books (or listen to the audiobooks) if you haven't. The roundtable discussion is a welcome added bonus. I will certainly be reading the volume II analysis as soon as season 2 of the tv show is complete. Full disclosure: I did receive a free copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
