COMPARED TO THAT • BROMBERG PLAYS HENDRIX • IN THE SPIRIT OF JOBIM

“I’m one of the lucky ones,” says the musician as he barrels down a desolate desert highway accompanied by a massive 300-year-old acoustic bass. Editorial Reviews

Grammy®-nominated bassist and producer Brian Bromberg is one of the most versatile and respected players in both straight ahead and contemporary jazz. Backed by a killer horn section, Bromberg gets loose and funky throughout the 13 tracks on It Is What It is, including his unique spin on the B52's dance classic "Love Shack." Brian is joined by another A-List of musicians including: George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Jeff Lorber, Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, Will Kennedy, Dave Weckl, Alex Acuña, Paul Jackson Jr., Dan Siegel and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius! September 28, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is the hottest album I've heard in a long time. Wow! It comes charging right out of the chute with the sizzling hot title song "It is what it is" and barely takes a breath from there. Brian's bass playing is phenomenal, and the stellar line up of artists on this album (listed above) complement his playing perfectly; as it is not just about Brian, the horns and keyboard leads are top notch The horn arrangements are crisp, fresh, tight - and smokin' hot! Darn near set off the smoke alarms. I love the playful take on the Sanford and Son theme where they out funk Fred and Lamont - who'd of thought? - with the exceptional flute solos of Gary Meek. Bottom line, this is instrumental jazz at it's best - forget smooth, contemporary, straight ahead, or any other nonsense label, this is great music played by some of the most talented musicians of our time. Brian is not just genius, he is the 800 lb gorilla on bass. Absolutely outstanding album.

The production quality is superb! If you are an old fashioned audiophile (like I am) with a high powered system, and you like the concert hall sound (like rock the neighborhood loud), you're going to love this! Get it and enjoy. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars [...] Review April 17, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Grammy-Nominated producer/bass master/composer... and notably one of a handful of musicians whose work has defined the genre... Brian Bromberg is still able to surprise and excite the jazz taste buds. IT IS WHAT IT IS comes in like a lion and goes out with a similar roar. 13 tracks of shear excellence, aside from playing all of the bass parts, Brian also plays guitar and surrounds himself with a horn section comprising of Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Gerald Albright and Rick Braun! If that were not enough, on keys: Patrice Rushen, Jeff Lorber and George Duke! The title track "It Is What It Is" sets the tone as it lays the ground work for what's to follow, namely a stunning collection of songs including, "Life" is a drop dead gorgeous ballad, "Elephants On Ice Skates" is the answer to a bass players prayers and the crisp "Slap Happy" is just that! IT IS WHAT IT IS is everything that it needs to be and then some! ~STEWART COXHEAD

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo Brian! September 14, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I have all of Brian's CD's and they're all awesome! On this latest release, Brian's tone is killer on upright, 4- & 5-string, and piccolo basses, A-list players, etc. You will not be disappointed.

Brian plays this stuff with great poise and passion..Truly an entertaining album..Unbelievable bass guitar work that will confuse most listeners...Think it's great to shake up all these purists who think they have heard it all...Listen to it all in one setting and prepare to smile the whole time.
