Although Mark Harris' Henry Wiggen baseball books were written many years ago (starting in the early 50's with "The Southpaw" and "Bang the Drum Slowly," and finishing in the 70's with "It Looked Like For Ever") these are great books that are timeless.
In some ways, "For Ever" is the best of the lot, because it deals with time and aging and how we deal with that. Henry becomes even bigger and more real as he grows fallible. I remain touched to this day.

This is a great novel for men in crisis at the end of a career. Henry Wiggins sees retirement this way: "you are idle, you are nothing, you got nothing to do, you roam about feeling useless, you got nothing left to do but your hands in your ass pockets and look alive if you can." But his lawyer tells him, "Many pleasures are past, but many new pleasures come to replace them." Whatever is the correct perception, the end cruelly comes and Henry must deal with it. The books is fully of spritely writing and keen observation. And it's better the second time.

I very much enjoyed the three books of Mark Harris' trilogy - especially "Bang the Drum Slowly". Wasn't aware until recently there was a fourth book. If you enjoyed the others, you'll like this one, too.

Good book...but please change the cover art as you have the pitcher in a right handed stance, and the story is all about his being a southpaw (a leftie).
