I originally picked up this book because I saw Ken Blanchard wrote the foreword, and I have enjoyed every book he has supported.

"It Only Hurts When I Listen" is the five love languages for communicators. I originally picked up this book because I saw Ken Blanchard wrote the foreword, and I have enjoyed every book he has supported. The listening assessment really helped me pin point what my problem was with communicating effectively. I always had issues with my mother (selective hearing), but by analyzing her listening language and my own I understand what I can do to avoid those fights. The book was a quick read and made perfect sense! I'm surprised that radical servant listening hasn't been pursued by counselors to help their clients fix relationship issues. By an Energizer/Innovator Listener :)

Connecting with those around you, whether in a professional or personal setting, is really about caring for other people. As described in Dr. Brunstetter's book, geniune connection with others requires a certain level of humility to shift the focus away from ourselves to another person and to listen, not just with our ears, but with our eyes and our heart. "It Only Hurts When I Listen" is a blueprint for radical listening habits that will fundamentally change how you relate to others, strengthen your communication skills and enrich your relationships.

Dr. John has capsulized the problem many of us have in our personal relationships - reliance on our own best thinking. Instead of listening to the pain, concerns and fears of another, we are often too quick to share our own personal trauma. Dr. John shows there are four styles of listeners and how to identify your own style and match it to the style of your friend. He has done a great job of self disclosure and pinpointing how each reader can attain a new level of intimacy and personal satisfaction by merely listening. It is a good read and will contribute significantly to each reader's personal body of knowledge. If you love studying and understanding human behavior, you will love Dr. John's book.

So often we wait to talk instead of listen. It Only Hurts When I Listen helped me see key areas I can improve my listening skills for work and home. I gave a copy to all my team members. The listening assessment was facintating. I highly recommend it.

Most of the leadership books I have read have emphasized good listening as a key component of communication and relationship building. Dr.Brunstetter's book, however, explores this critical skill on a much deeper level. My tendency, particularly as it relates to my role in starting and growing a business, has been to act first and listen later. Exploring the concepts presented in this book has been an enlightening process. The positive impact I have already seen in my business, client, and family relationships has been very encouraging. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is not only looking for a better understanding of communication challenges, but wants intentional, high impact solutions as well.

This book is a must read for everyone! We all have issues of not listening to others, but just hearing the words being said. This book can help teach all of us willing to make the change, to actually listen to what the other person, or persons are saying to us. Dr.Brunstetter has a real talent in helping the reader to understand the difference between "hearing" what someone said, and "listening" to what they said.

For some time, I have felt invisible. "It only hurts when I listen" redirects focus and empowers individuals to increase understanding of others when speaking.

Strongly recommend! I'm learning to be a servant listener and Dr. Brunstetter's book has given me a new focus. Short and to the point, "It Only Hurts When I Listen" gave me a place to start and a direction to head. My "Listening Assessment" score, Chapter 2, was a 2.4 out of 5.0! Fair, at best. Tracking each of the assessment questions thru the following seven chapters provided a clear roadmap for improvement. As a classic Analyzer/Planner (I received my profile suggested in the Appendix.), I'm now practicing recognizing and responding to others whose servant listening languages are different from mine. My new goal is to be truly influenced by them using my new listening skills.
