Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9?Formerly part of the "Peoples of North America" series (Chelsea), these revised titles, like their predecessors, are well organized, carefully written, and highly readable accounts of different ethnic groups in America. Against background history, the authors relate why people emigrated, their reception in the U.S., and how they have adapted. The texts, however, remain unchanged for the most part. Some historical material has been dropped, and other sections have been reworded to give the information a new slant. Cuban Americans has added paragraphs on such topics as bilingualism in the U.S.; Italian Americans has more on the Mafia and participation in the labor movement. Both volumes have increased their coverage of each group's literary and intellectual contributions. Fascinating black-and-white period photographs and a full-color picture portfolio stimulate interest, but only four of the photos, all in Italian Americans, have been changed. The bibliographies have been expanded and updated. Unnecessary purchases if you have the older editions.?Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative book for all ages!, October 1, 1998
By A Customer
Although, this book was written for children 9-12 yrs. I found it to be a very interesting and informative book for any age. This was my first book to read to get general background information on my Italian ancestors. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a general overview of the Italian history timeline.
