Editorial Reviews

BOCCACCIO 70 (DVD): Sophia Loren stars in this four-part film that was meant to tap the international smash of Federico Fellini's ''La Dolce Vita''. Four directors were hired to create segments ostensibly based on the tales of Boccaccio: Fellini himself (in the lull between ''La Dolce Vita'' and ''8-1/2''), Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica and Mario Monicelli. SPECIAL FEATURES: Photo gallery, Original American theatrical trailer. 1962 - Color - 205 minutes - 1.66:1 - Italian with English Subtitles.

CASANOVA 70: Marcello Mastroianni portrays the handsome lover Casanova pitted against a thoroughly modern woman. This is a legendary hero often depicted in movies, but this time he is portrayed with a slightly different problem - the only time he's ''in the mood'' is when he feels that he is in danger. His job as a NATO officer offers plenty of opportunity for his sexual arousal problems to be assuaged. ACADEMY AWRD NOMINEE - BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY. From director Mario Monicelli. 1965 - Color - 90 minutes - 1.72:1 - Italian with English Subtitles.

STORY OF A LOVE AFFAIR: 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITION (DVD): Paola (Lucia Bose) is the beautiful and jealously-guarded younger wife of a shady factory owner, Enrico Fontana (Massimo Girotti). In order to investigate her romantic history he hires a private detective, which ironically brings Paola back into contact with former lover Guido, with whom she resurrects a lost passion. Dogged by the suspicions of their respective mates, they are drawn closer to each other in the face of adversity, and begin to plot Enrico's demise. But when the challenge of being together falls away, will the passion start to wane? From acclaimed Director Michelangelo Antonioni (Blow-up, The Passenger). SPECIAL FEATURES : TBD. 1950 - Black & White - 98 minutes - 1.33:1 - Italian with English Subtitles.

Italian cinema. Born in the early 1900's and known for their epic silent films to their avant-garde movement in the teens but most notably, the creation of Italian Neorealism of the 1940's.

Films that would showcase war, post-war and the economic strife of the struggling working class. During this era, filmmakers such as Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini and others would be known for their work depicting life of Italy's new society.

By the 1950, we would see a new filmmaker named Michelangelo Antonioni emerge from documentary filmmaking to creating a tragic melodrama and Italian noir film "Story of a Love Affair" and by the 1960's, Italy would see Commedia all'Italiana (Italian Comedy) take form and filmmaker Mario Monicelli becoming well-known for his romantic comedies.

For many cineaste who have acquired a collection of Italian neorealism films from these famous directors or Michelangelo's more "alienating" films of the '60s, for those who want to experience the "other" films made by these filmmakers can definitely enjoy the works of Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica and Mario Monicelli through Kino Lorber's DVD box set "Great Italian Directors Collection".

Included in this box set is Michelangelo Antonioni's first full feature-length film "Story of a Love Affair" from 1950 which showcases Antonioni's first work that dealt with tragic romance. The film presented on DVD is the new restoration by Cinecitta Studio and also includes a second DVD with four lengthy special featurettes.

Out of this interesting collection of Italian language films (all shown with easy-to-read white subtitles, not harsh yellow), my absolute favorite is Casanova 70 starring that real-life casanova Marcello Mastroianni. He shines as a hapless army officer who can only make love in a dangerous atmosphere, and there are a parade of lovely ladies as his conquests including gorgeous blonde Virna Lisi. The next best DVD is the serio-comic Boccaccio 70 which showcases 4 shorts by 4 different famous Italian directors - Federico Fellini does Act II which stars his La Dolce Vita sexpot Anita Ekberg, and this short is a sort of send-up of her Sylvia role from Dolce Vita whereby she ambles along in a long dress with billowing scarf, flirting and laughing her deep throaty laugh. Act III is from director Luchino Visconti who also uses one of his favorite actresses Romy Schneider in the more dramatic story about a cheated-on wife's revenge. Act IV has beautiful Sophia Loren working at a carnival, directed by the wonderful Vittorio DeSica who was Loren's mentor of Italian cinema (and helped her win the Oscar for Two Women). The first act directed by Mario Monicelli is the least good, about a newly married young couple and their travails on their wedding day. The third DVD is the serious drama Story of A Love Affair directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, this was his first full length movie and not a great story, but you do get hints of his future greatness with his unique fondness for rigid architectural camera angles and the stillness of a Giorgio Morandi landscape. This DVD set is a good value and makes a nice addition to your foreign film DVD collection, and most importantly all three discs are playable on USA DVD machines. Beware some other foreign film DVDs, as even when they advertise "plays in all regions" they sometimes don't, as I found with the Mr. Bongo series which was a Region 2.

Lately, I've had this fascination with Italian Directors and Neo-Realism and these (4-Disc Set) did not disappoint me, in the least. There are varying styles, but one gets to look at traditional and new immerging values of the post-war Italy and the rising "stars" of mainstream Italian cinema; 4 great movies and I enjoy watching them again and again, because there is always something that adds to the story-line that, watching beforehand, I missed. Look-out, I've got more orders coming your way! Thanks. Keith H.
