Book Description

March 1, 1989
Though it was a medium employed by many of the leading painters of the day, few are aware of the scope and significance of Italian etching. This catalogue presents the first overview of etching in Italy from 1520 to 1700, and of its importance to the visual arts of the Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque periods. Printed duotone on heavy laid paper, Italian Etchers is an indispensable reference for any student or admirer of Italian art, or of the graphic arts in general.

This review is from: Italian Etchers of the Renaissance and Baroque (Hardcover)
This anthology makes a nice companion with de Groot's "Landscape Etchings of the Dutch Masters of the Seventeenth Century" which I have also reviewed. Like the de Groot book, "Italian Etchers of the Renaissance and Baroque" covers the same time period although in Italy rather than Holland and many of the reproductions are life size which contributes to the accessibility of details, crosshatching, etc. This is a brilliant addition to my collection of art history books! Eighty Italian etchers in all. Add "Etchings and Drawings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and other Italian Artists of the Eighteenth Century" and one has the entire history of Italian etching from its earliest days until the 19th century etching revival.
