This is a very good intro to Italian. I was pleasantly surprised that it approaches the language in more depth than I expected. However, I am half-way through the book and already found around 50 typos, misspellings, left out translations. The typos are mostly Italian words, so a newbie to the language is stuck. I am in a class using this book so the teacher points those out to us. The authors and publishers need to hire a competent proofreader quickly. They should be embarrassed that this--2nd edition--is so full of errors.

Getting ready for a trip to Italy and wanted to be prepared with basic phrases. I am using several different resources and found that rote memorization is fine to a point, but this book takes you a bit further. THis is not a book of phrases. The author actually explains why the language is constructed the way it is and how the phrases are used in different circumstances. If you are looking for a phrase book, this might be a bit much. If you want to combine a phrase book with a bit of "beyond the basics" this book would work well for you.

Purchased the Kindle version of the book but AFTER I purchased I was informed that the CD that is adversited is not supplied with the Kindle version. If I would have known this I wouldn't have purchased the Kindle version. Very disappointed.

This seems reasonable for a first attempt at learning Italian. The textbook gives you some basic grammar, especially for verb conjugations. The book includes the various dialogues that you listen to on the CD, as well as a very useful pronunciation guide that breaks each Italian word into phonetic components that correspond to American English. The single CD that comes with this book is suitable for listening to while driving. The CD does not state the English equivalent for each line of the spoken dialogue--for that you need to go to the book. The CD narration does, however, state the topic of each dialogue and introduce the scene and the characters involved. Given the simple nature of the dialogues, these introductions, combined with perusing the book in advance, should be allow most people to understand what is said--even while driving.
