THE ONLY QUESTION IS WHICH ONE I LIKE MORE., November 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Italian Job Gift Set (includes 1969 and 2003 Versions) (DVD)
This is the right way to make a remake: fun, clever, and full of great stunts (as opposed to unbelievable CGI effects a la Charlie's Angels). The old version is pretty good too, I bought it without having seeing it before and it didn't dissapoint. It doesn't always make sense (just what the heck did the Minis climb that huge roof for ?) but then again, who cares ?!? Great movies which make your DVD player a great reason to exist!

Exceptional combo, March 17, 2004
This review is from: The Italian Job Gift Set (includes 1969 and 2003 Versions) (DVD)
With a common deminator of Morris Minors these two movies reflect the entertainment of their day. The original, starring a ridiculously young Michael Caine, remains fresh despite its age. Filled with irepressible Cockney humor it moves between the comic moments to the final 'cliffhanger' leaving us all hanging. With appearance by Noel Coward, Benny Hill (in true form) The new version is much more a thriller of today. superbly fast paced, a truly rotten villain (a great performace as always from Edward Norton) and some brilliant heist scenes this ranks up there with the Rock, Con Air and the like for excitement. Mark Whalberg shines and Charlize Theron is so much more than joyous eye candy here.

The Polish of of the 2003 Version, January 1, 2012
This review is from: The Italian Job Gift Set (includes 1969 and 2003 Versions) (DVD)
This combination packet allows us to see both the original 1969 version and the 2003 version. For a review of the 1969 version please refer to the site for that release. As for this viewer the 2003 version has more spunk and spakle than the original for the following reasons. THE ITALIAN JOB has style and a grand sense of speed and action in one of the better caper films of recent years. Where other heist-based films push the button for unremitting tension, THE ITALIAN JOB combines sleekly written dialogue and character interaction which makes all of the tension scenes (and there are plenty) all the more credible. The photography of the inevitable car chases and 'inside shots' of the capers is terrific, with the scenes set in Venice, Italy among the best. The cast is electrically charged without that all too familiar over-the-top push. Donald Sutherland and Charlize Theron (father/daughter team) are superb, and Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Mos Def, and Franky G establish a comraderie that is destined to overcome their betraying partner Edward Norton. With a cast like this you almost don't need a script, but the writing has a fine balance of bite and wit. For sheer explosive entertainment by a crew of winners this movie is among the best in this genre. Grady Harp, January 12
