Those who criticize this book I think miss the point. The authors presume the reader has a working knowledge of Italian already and wants to supplement that working knowledge. I agree that this book is probably not too helpful for the beginner but if you are at the intermediate level of Italian it is a terrific book both for the actual idioms themselves and for showing how verb tenses work. Memorize as many of these idioms as you can and you find yourself "mixing and matching" one phrase from the book with another phrase from an entirely different part of the book. Suddenly, you gain a sense of how the language really works and your fluency goes up remarkably. I did just that and in 2008 (my last visit to Italy) I was actually mistaken for a native speaker when I was in Florence. Book is excellent for the intermediate student of "la lingua italiana" [the italian language]

4.0 out of 5 stars Not all language is strict grammar! February 7, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book contains a huge list of idioms. Much of spoken language is made up of IDIOMS like "it is raining cats and dogs" or "it's like finding a needle in a haystack". These phrases clearly connote an idea but do not exactly make logical sense. Each language has it's own idioms. Just browsing thru this book is very interesting. The book is organized alphabetically by the Italian so it is a bit difficult to find something specific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful language tool July 2, 2010

This little book offers a lot of phrases, organized by keyword, to help you understand expressions where a literal translation would lead you astray. Great when you start reading italian novels.
