1.0 out of 5 stars Typical American Italian food
This is your typical Americanised Italian cookbook. Recipes are so basic they are uninspiring and there are millions of better books out there. I would recommend Louke Werles Ialian cook book, now thats fantastic Italian food that hasn;t been tampered with.

Forget Balduccis and other places with fancy prices and less than superb food - get this and wow your friends and family without knocking yourself out - or hurting your budget. I have already tested several of these recipes and they are superb! Full-color photos of every recipe on every page and great directions. These are the real thing, too, everyday cooking (as well as fancier, more expensive recipes if you like) for true culinary feasts, Italian style. All the pasta dishes you'd expect, plus a wealth of seafood recipes - from seafood marinara to calimari. There's even a recipe for Duck Casserole which I'd like to try soon. If you find a copy, you'll probably pay a pretty penny, but you won't regret it. Worth every penny I've paid and I'd gladly pay double the price for this one!

I love this cookbook!!! Her recipes are just like my Grandmother used to make. Unfortunately all of our family recipes are not written down. So whenever I am unsure of how to make something I check with Elodia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy the Book for the Manicotti Crepes alone, May 7, 2004

My sister had this book and made the Manicotti Crepes and meatballs for a family dinner. I liked it so much, I bought my own copy of the book. Elodia's recipes are great, they are old-fashioned good but suited to the busy working cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neighborhood recipes, April 18, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Italian Immigrant Cooking (Immigrant Cookbook Series, Bk. #1) (Hardcover)
Mrs. Rigante and my husband's grandmother were aquaintances in her Brooklyn neighborhood; they lived just a few blocks from one another. Grandma didn't write down a lot of her recipes, so Mrs. Rigante's cookbook is a lifesaver. Their recipes are so similar it's like having a bit of home every time you open up the book. We can't look through it without getting hungry! Every recipe we've tried is excellent, and I love the family anecdotes and pictures. This is a staple for every cookbook collection.

When she arrivd at Ellis Island from Italy, my Grandmother Chiarella Derlitz brought what I have always believed to be the BEST Italian recipes possible. If she didn't make it, it wasn't really Italian.. Well, Grandma would have approved of Elodia Rigante's Italian Immigrant Cooking. So many of Mama Rigante's recipes are simple twists on grandma's favorites, complete with family photos that could be my own. The recipes that she has included that are new to me feel as if I've known them forever. Get this book back in print! Now!

This is the best Italian cookbook I have used. The recipes are direct and simple to follow. There are also pictures of almost all the recipes. If you enjoy simple down to earth good Italian food, this is the cookbook for you. It reminds me of my Grandmother's cooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, yet elegant, hearty fare!, February 24, 2008
I got this book as a gift, and I've tossed other books out of the way as a result. The recipes are delicious, honest and easy. They are from a time when you didn't need $4000-worth of appliances to make dinner, and I have found that all of the recipes I've used in the book are superb.

If you are looking for an Italian cookbook, stop your search. You will do no better than to purchase this book by Elodia Rigante. After more than five years of exploring this cookbook, we still haven't found a poor recipe. Excellent value and accessible instructions. We return to it in our kitchen regularly and have practically memorized some of our favorite recipes.Great background material as well on the early 20th Century Italian immigrant experience ala Brooklyn.

This book would be accepted by my Italian ancestors. Italian cooks just know what you add by smell and taste and more smelling and tasting. This gets you to the final process quickly. I must warn you that if the receipe says it feeds 4 that would translate to 4 large adult men who have skipped breakfast and lunch. It is a delicious feast that brought back fond memories of Sunday dinner at Grandmothers.
