Italian Joy is a smooth read through the winding streets of charming neighborhoods complete with vivacious people, rich food, aromatic coffee, and charismatic men (now I understand why Italian men call out to women!). It's a lovely break from your day to sit with this book and immerse your senses into the ways of what is daily life in Italy, as Ms. Coulson does a lovely job of transmitting these details. I found it interesting, and alluring, to watch someone make a life transition into a profession that many would call a fanciful dream, and even more admirable at an age that many would consider "unwise" to make a change at all. This is definitely a book about living! Finally, Ms. Coulson's photography brings to visual life the details of Italy that her words describe, and frankly, are beyond beautiful.

Of all the books on the market that Carla Coulson has either written or done the photography in, this is by far her best effort. "Italian Joy" captures the very essence of what I imagine Italians and their life style to be. Having known a number of 'real' Italians, this book describes them to a "t".

It is definitely a 'feel good' book that will leave you wanting more in the way of adventure and sightseeing. Is is coffee table sized, and beautiful to look at. But the 'story' itself is as charming and appealing as the pictures.

My only regret at the end was that she espouses a life living with her boyfriend, without marriage. And as old fashioned as that may sound, I am always disappointed that books of today are so out of touch with what I feel many people still think of as 'morality'.

Carla's next book, "Paris Tango", which I also own, was not nearly as warm and appealing as this one. It lacks the 'joy' of the Italian book. And sadly seemed to me that Carla has become a little jaded since her more carefree Italian days. Or perhaps Paris is just much more 'serious' business than the rest of Europe!

I am a great fan of Carla Coulson's work, having first discovered her work in Amanda Tabberer's book "My Amalfi Coast" My Amalfi Coast (highly recommended) and also in the work of Vicki Archer - both her Blog "French Essence" and her book "French Essence" French Essence: Ambience, Beauty, and Style in Provence(again, both highly recommended).

I am an armchair traveller, who visited Italy a long time ago, and I have to say that Carla's work shines with the Spirit of Italy - she quite clearly loves the place and this comes glowing through her photography and her writing. Her story of how she came to pack up a career in Australia and move to Italy is both funny and moving - I was actually quite surprised at how well she writes - perhaps I had the prejudice that as she has such a stunning visual sense that she couldn't possibly be a good writer as well... I was wrong about that :)

Italian Joy covers such vital parts of Italian life as The Market, Summer, To The Table, Love, The Bar, Happy Eating, The Italians, Family and Friends and so on; with Carla's gorgeous photography complimented by her evocative prose. The Cover of this book is interesting as it folds out to a poster-sized sheet of her photos.

Yes, I know I sound a bit OTT, but I LOVE this book - I'm buying her new book "Chasing A Dream" as soon as I can get to the bookshop. Do check out her Blog - Carla Loves Photography to get more of her work for free.

Disclaimer: No, I am not Carla :) No, I am not a friend of hers. No, I do not work for the publisher :) I just love this book !
