For most people,ITALIAN cinéma really started after the second world war with actresses like MAGNANI,LOLLOBRIGIDA and LOREN,but this book will confirm to you that ITALIAN cinema started before that.World cinéma lovers always liked ITALIAN actresses because of their fabulous beauty. You will find all the actresses that made ITALIAN cinema so appealing in this book until the mid neighties. All have a general biography that shows their ascension in the firmament of stars. The majority of the ITALIAN actresses were winners of beauty contests before they made the transition to movie stars. All in all a very good book worth having if you are interested in the subject.I noticed that they made a mistake with the birth year of LAURA ANTONELLI(it's 1941 not 1946)This can be corrected in a future edition. The book is also available in FRENCH.There is a list of films for all actresses selected at the end of the book.

The only problems I have with _Italian Movie Goddesses_ are that it isn't long enough, and that there aren't more pictures of each of the featured actresses. The book (which, by the way, though published in Italy, is in English) reviews the lives and careers of some 80 of the leading beauties of Italian cinema since its inception. Internationally renowned stars like Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Laura Antonelli and Claudia Cardinale are amply covered, naturally, but just as valuable is the attention that's paid to stars not as well-known outside Italy such as Silvana Pampanini, Isa Miranda, Giulietta Masina, Rossana Podesta and Alida Valli. Not merely a fine photographic collection, but an important basic reference work on actresses too seldom seen in the English-speaking world except on import tapes and DVD's. Usually very expensive, but well worth the price. Highest recommendation!
