5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Baroque Oboe Collection June 18, 2001
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The concerto for oboe is regaining popularity and use, and this resurrgence is aided by this fine collection by Oboeist/Director Nicholas Daniel and the Peterborough String Orchestra.
All the pieces of this concerto collection are well-done, flowing and lyrical with great balance between the strings the oboe solos.
Especially appealing to my ear is the Siciliana of Cimarosa's concerto as well as Bellini's Concerto.
Crystal clear recording for a great bargain price! Well worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable disc November 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is a very good disc of three Baroque concertos by Albinoni, Marcello and Vivaldi, and two from the late 18th Century and early 19th Century by Cimarosa and Bellini respectively. It makes a very enjoyable programme; I find the oboe a lovely concerto instrument and all the works are musically very fine. The slow movement of the Albinoni, in particular, is fabulously beautiful.

Paul Daniel plays extremely well. His tone and phrasing are excellent and he makes even the most demanding passages seem completely natural. I find the tempi of some of the quicker movements a little ponderous, but certainly not enough to spoil my enjoyment. The orchestra are supple and responsive to the music and the whole thing makes a very pleasurable listen.

The recorded sound, notes and presentation are of Hyperion's usual high standard and now that this is at budget price there's no need to hesitate – you get five lovely works, very well played. Warmly recommended.

(I would also heartily recommend Andrew Manze's recording of Albinoni's Op.9 concertos with Frank de Bruine playing the oboe solos: Albinoni: 12 Concertos, Op.9)

5.0 out of 5 stars A very accomplished artist October 16, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I treasure my purchase of this compilation of Oboe Concertos. Nicholas Daniel is an accomplished Oboe player even though I'd not heard his name before to my knowledge. The accompaniment is also by an accomplished ensemble of players. The group of Italian composers chosen is wonderful (Vivaldi, Albinoni, Marcello, etc.) and their magical musical voices add to the complete enjoyment of the CD. The total package is delightful listening. I would recommend this CD for either download or CD player.
