Product Description
The Italian Riviera means Liguria, which like a vial of essential oil conserves a concentrated dose of Mediterranean sensuality: mountains plunging into the sea, painted fishing ports and fleshpot resorts decked in flowers; at table, the birthplace of pesto offers a fresh, zesty cuisine. Yet just beyond the Riviera's sleekest cliches - Portofino and Portovenere, sassy San Remo, and the fabled Cinque Terre - there awaits a secret world of deep forests, hilltowns teetering on impossible brinks, olive groves and vineyards. In Genoa the scene changes again: piled high over the sea, Italy's great port is also its most under-rated art city, boasting one of the largest medieval centers in Europe, Baroque extravaganzas and the sparkling rebuilt Porto Antico.

This guide contains: practical travel advice; 200 hand-picked places to stay; 180 restaurants, bars & cafes; 18 maps & site plans; color touring-map section; stunning color photography; shopping in local markets. (5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 268 pages, color photos, maps)

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guide to Italian Riviera and Liguria, October 11, 2002
By A Customer
My wife and I bought all the guidebooks for the Italian Riviera and Liguria for our trip there March 02. The Cadogan guide was by far the best. The layout was easier to use and find info. The print was large enough to comfortably read while in the car going up and down the mountains. The historical capsules were brief yet informative. The pictures were few but good. After our first day or two, we dispensed with all the other guides and just used the Cadogan.

BTW, Liguria (Italian Riviera) is far superior to the French Riviera (which is still a great place).

Both have colorful histories and great scenery. The Italians are a bit friendlier, the hills there steeper and more dramatic. Most important is the contrast in small village life. In France, the fascinating medieval villages are wall-to-wall tourist shops. In Italy, the villages are where people still live and work. A much better experience for us.

For the Italian Riviera, train is the best mode of transportation. For the French Riviera, we prefer a car.

Eric
