About the Author

Jane Gordon Clark is a designer and writer on interior design. While a student at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford she travelled widely in Italy, developing an interest in Italian art, architecture and design. Ten years ago she and her husband acquired a small ruined castle in Umbria which she has been gradually restoring, spending part of each year in Italy. She founded the design company Ornamenta in 1987 and creates their collections of trompe l'oeil decorations, hand-printed wallpapers and fabrics. She is chairman of the Friends of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the author of Frances Lincoln's Paper Magic (1991). Simon Upton is a regular contributor to leading interiors magazines such as The World of Interiors and House and Garden. He has taken the photographs for several books including Living National Treasures and Living in London and was principal photographer for Beatrix Potter at Home in the Lake District (Frances Lincoln 2000). --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the Italy I know, March 23, 2011

This review is from: Italian Style (Hardcover)
I have to admit that this is the first interior design book I ever bought and got absolutely nothing out of it. No inspiration and certainly no idea how Italian people live.
Not that I do not know how Italian people live, as I spent years in Italy and visited every region from the Piedmont to Sicily and was invited in palazzi and masserie belonging to owners of every income and creative level.

This books paints a picture of Italy's interiors of being all antique and rustique. Italian designers are about the most modern and leading ones in the world and most Italians I met integrate these modern designs in their homes. Even if the house is a thousand years old you will usually find some very modern furniture, lamps or decorations in it.

I have seen more interesting rooms, houses, exteriors in the cities and villages I visited than the ones shown in this book. And there is no major city and no region in Italy I have not visited. This book was a huge disappointment for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative yet classical approach, May 20, 2000

This review is from: Italian Style (Hardcover)
The subject itself is so exciting that you must be really bad writers and photographers to miss the point. "Italian style" authors are both very creative persons. Read "a new look at country style" from photograph Simon Upton. You might be shocked by the green carpet on the floor of a very simple white classical house. These guys play with colors, concepts, modes. They drive us to new approaches. Buy this book or ask somebody to offer it to you.
