3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, but overpowering..., May 31, 2008

This is a great book for information, problem is that there is almost (well, there just is) too much information here and it's not the easiest book to navigate around, no do you really know what you're looking at on the page. There really is too much there and while I, in general bought it wanting to know about certain wines, vintages, etc., each entry you look at is less about what exactly you are looking for and more about the actual company producing and some ratings. There really are no tasting notes and I also found the lack of specifics about varietals, regions and the wine itself really unnerving.

I bought the book sight unseen as I wanted a book to reference Italian Wines with. Well, reference it does, but be prepared to really spend some time engrossed in this book as it's a real humdinger to get through and actually find what you are looking for (you'll probably actually need the internet and other reference material handy so you can cross reference to get a whole picture of what you're looking for). Honestly, to me, this book and layout is a bit of a convoluted mess. I've also seen the 2008 edition, as I use it at work also, and it's the same way.

If you have a HUGE investment in Italian wines and need to reference vintages from the 1970's to present day for some specifics, then I could see where this could be useful. But as a wine professional, this book is not well layed out and doesn't really do anything for me. I need quick referencing and easy to find and use information. For those purposes, this book is not a good choice. There is just too much to wade through.
