Book Description

July 17, 1999 0752413171 978-0752413174
The stories of Chicagoís Italian communities are an important part of the rich and diverse mosaic of Chicago history. As a rail center, an industrial center, and Americaís fastest growing major city, Chicago offered opportunities for immigrants from all nations. Italians in Chicago presents an intriguing narrative record of the earliest beginnings of Italian communities in the city, going back to the 1850s. It explores the lives of ten significant members of the Chicago Italian-American community. ÝÝThis book is a collaborative, cumulative effort, and gives glimpses and echoes of what occurred in the Italian-American past in Chicago. Including vintage images and tales of such individuals as Father Armando Pierini, Anthony Scariano, and Joe Bruno, and groups such as the Aragona Club and the Maria Santissima Lauretana Society, this collection uncovers the challenges and triumphs of these Italian immigrants. 4.0 out of 5 stars Chicago's early Italians, September 4, 2000

This review is from: Italians in Chicago (IL) (Images of America) (Library Binding)
"ITALIANS IN CHICAGO" is part of the book series IMAGES OF AMERICA. The book is a compilation of old photographs that capture the Italian migration of the early 1900's and the life styles of the newly settled immigrants in Chicago. The importance of family, neighborhood and church in establishing a new found Italian-American community is captured pictorially throughout the book. Photographs from the various conclaves of Italians on the north, west and south sides are presented. Although the conclaves are dispersed throughout the city a common cultural uniformity can be seen to develop. The book is a valuable supplement to any serious research on the history of Chicago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, July 31, 2008
This is a really awesome book! I was hoping it would be interesting and not too dull, but it is fascinating and I am enjoying it far more than I expected! The detail is great, it is very readable, more story-like than just facts and figures which is more what I was expecting. I would highly recommend this book to those interested not only in Italians, but in Chicago history in general.
