Book Description

October 31, 2005
People of Italian descent have been present in Detroit since Alfonso Tonti, second-in-command to Antoine Cadillac, participated in the founding of the city in 1701. By the close of the 19th century, the trickle of Italian immigrants had become a torrent, as thousands rushed to the growing industrial center. Settling on the lower east side, the community grew rapidly, especially north and east into Macomb County. Italians in Detroit did not remain in a "little Italy," but mingled with the diverse population of the city. Through a combination of hard work and strong family and community ties, the Italians of Detroit have achieved their dreams of a better life. They have met the challenges of living in a new land while nurturing the culture of the old country. The challenge that remains is to nurture a love of

heritage among young Italian Americans as the immigrant generation fades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent pictorial history, November 20, 2005
This review is from: Italians in Detroit (MI) (Images of America) (Paperback)
This is a great pictorial essay of the Italian Immigrant Experience in Detroit. Armando Delicato takes your hand and walks you through the Immigration process. Once settled in Detroit he invites you through the Churches, the Arts, the People, and the Future of Italian/American's in Detroit. The abundance of photographs brings this history to life. I highly recommend this book to anyone with strong roots or interest in the Italian heritage.

I was born and raised in Detroit in 1943 to an Italian family. The memories are amazing especially with my Immigrant Grandparents and the traditions they left us. We lived in the St. Elizabeth parish and later I went back there to get married. This book brought back many fond memories.

This review is from: Italians in Detroit (MI) (Images of America) (Paperback)
The glowing praise bestowed by other reviewers is well deserved. Truly a labor of love, rich in memories of a great city and a great time. Kudos to the author, who I was privileged to know during my school days in Wayne, Michigan.
