Editorial Reviews

Review

For those waiting for a purely Charlotte Mason handwriting program, you can rejoice; it has finally arrived! -- M. L., TX

I'm using your book with my child. She is doing very well. We have tried MANY programs including the Getty/Dubay." -- Private correspondence

From the Author

Charlotte Mason would have us teach the child basic italics (printing) then use meaningful copy work to practice. Later the students learn cursive italics and use that with their copy work. Students do not need a workbook for every elementary grade. This one workbook is all they need.

More About the Author

Penny Gardner, mother of six, has over 20 years experience as a home educator and several years teaching experience in public and charter schools. She started using Charlotte Mason in her homeschool in 1994 with excellent results. She wrote The Charlotte Mason Study Guide in 1997. The expanded 10th anniversary edition of this book is available in digital format (PDF).

Penny presents a Charlotte Mason Homeschool Seminar all over the country. This multi-media seminar inspires attendees with practical how-to information. You may contact Penny to set up a seminar in your area. Here is a sampling of comments from attendees:

"Penny has a way of sharing Charlotte Mason's ideas so that you feel you can really go home and implement these methods. It was so inspiring!" --San Diego, April 2002

"Penny's seminar is the bridge between Charlotte Mason theory and it's application. She gives understandable, practical advice. I left with the confidence to start applying this method immediately. " --Henderson, NV, 2002

Penny also wrote Italics, Beautiful Handwriting for Children. This book differs from others on the market because it is so closely tied to Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy. This book is available in a new, expanded digital edition.

When Penny wanted to teach her daughter music, she chose recorder because it is inexpensive and easy to play. But she could not find a method that she liked for someone with no musical background. So she wrote a book for beginning students. The Nine-Note Recorder Method is a book for any beginner, regardless of age, and is used in public schools and colleges. There are several supplemental books in the Nine-Note Recorder Book series. The supplemental books are available as PDF's that you print out.

Penny Gardner's hobbies include performing in a Renaissance group, playing recorders and viola da gamba. She loves reading, hiking, yoga, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, simple, and the kids love it., July 27, 2007
This review is from: Italics: Beautiful Handwriting for Children (Spiral-bound)
This thin little spiral-bound book is simply wonderful (and easy to copy). Each step builds on the last and at no point is a lesson too difficult or scary. Suddenly a child is printing beautifully, and then a couple of weeks later he is writing cursive that has every other parent asking me, "HOW does your child have such lovely writing?" Do look at the individual pages in Amazon's search feature. This book works for all our very different children. Can't praise it enough.

My 6 year old has beautiful handwriting from this book. It truly is a work of art. In my opinion, if they are going to learn to write anyways, why not do it beautifully?
