You have to thoroughly clean out the brown stained water after each use and DURING USE is you don't want to risk having it spewed on your clothes.

I bought one from a mall kiosk. Problems: (1) black water will get on your clothes if you are not careful to rinse it out each time. (2) You have to refill it 2 or 3 times for each shirt. (3) The unit gets very hot and if you are not careful to only touch the handle, you will get burned. (4) It takes more power the more salt you put in it. It would dim my lights and it can easily blow a fuse.

I bought my Italsteam at a mall in Florida about 8 months ago. I am a costume designer and wardrobe manager for theater companies and I do so without a car. It is small and portable and very easy to use if you follow the directions. I love it.
The only things you should really be aware of going in are that:

1. The steam only lasts 8 minutes and needs to be refilled. But for those 8 minutes it does an amazing job at getting out wrinkles in virtually any fabric I have tried it on. Yes you need to be careful after having used it for a while because the base does get hot but this is not exactly surprising considering there is no separate tank for the heating to happen in. I just keep a tea towel handy for use when when adding water. otherwise this does not do any harm to fabric.

2. You MUST use salt as per the instructions or the chemical reaction that produces the steam will not happen. (did it once out of necessity, it will not happen again).

3. DO NOT over fill the steamer, (that brown water other reviewers complain about spitting out of the steamer? well the spitting only happens when you put too much water in the steamer). Otherwise the brown water stays inside.

4. You need to rinse it out at the end of your usage in a day (I wouldn't want to leave salt water sitting around in a product with metal components for long periods anyway, think corrosion and rust).

5. It doesn't do crisp but that is not important to me since that is not what I bought it for.

Basically it does the job of a larger steamer in a very compact package It is meant as a travel steamer and as such is small and somewhat limited at 8 min a shot. if it had enough steam for 15 or 20min I would give it 5 stars but it does what it promises and that is really all you can ask of anything.

I was in Vegas like another reviewer and bought this product thinking: 1. Quality must be good as it was made in Italy 2. Somehow, it worked in the kiosk and I even tried it myself.

I took it home (followed directions perfectly), and it just did not do a great job at all. In fact, it had a brown stuff coming out on the clothes. I will contact customer service and perhaps the credit card company.

I suppose, my only saving grace is that hopefully this review and others I will post online will prevent people from making the mistake that I did. A mistake that cost me 40 dollars.

Thanks

I have used many steamers and this is hands down the best that I've ever used. I was surprised by the other reviews.....as all you have to do is follow the instructions and you will have a great experience. You must rinse it out in between each refill or brown water will get on your clothes, but just take the few seconds to rinse it out. It starts almost instantly. You can use it on your hotel bed like an iron and put creases in your pants. You can use it upright to do hanging items. It is powerful and emits a lot of steam. It does get hot. So when I refilled it I used a washcloth to hold onto the base. Also by turning it on its side you can pause the steam from coming out. After using mine on my most recent business trip - I highly recommend it.

DO NOT BUY. Learn from my mistake.
I am a jerk for buying THREE at the mall. I was weary at first, but I tried it and it really seemed to work. I have been looking for a good steamer and I bought two more for presents. It doesn't work. Brown stuff has ruined my favorite shirt. I went back to the mall kiosk and he told me to bring it back and he will look at it, acting totally "surprised" about the brown stuff. Please, give me a break. The biggest tragedy is that I can't find my receipt to return them and now I am out $100 and my best shirt.

We paid $45 plux tax for this way overpriced piece of junk called ItalSteam. As soon as you get it home and try it, you will immediately know why it says in big print on your receipt "NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS." Too bad we didn't notice this at the time. Only JUNK is sold in this manner! I could 'iron/steam' only 1-1/2 shirts before it needed refilling. You have to wait until it cools down before you can do that. The steam is uneven and sometimes spits brown spots on your clothes. The cord is too short (5 and 1/2 feet) to use most places (ridiculous!). The plastic is lightweight, but that's because it is so cheaply made. You have to thoroughly clean out the brown stained water after each use and DURING USE is you don't want to risk having it spewed on your clothes. Also, by reading other reviews on this site for this product, we all paid different prices. I believe this is because it depends upon how reluctant you seem to buy it. The longer you hold out, the cheaper it is going to get. Too bad we didn't know that then. Maybe we would have had a far better purchase at $15 instead of (with tax) $48.71. What a major RIPOFF!!!!! And it doesn't do the proper job on your clothes, either. I wonder what kind of fabric they use to demonstrate it? From now on, anything we buy at any of those mall kiosks we will ask if it can be returned for a REFUND, NOT an exhange! And there's nothing else to exchange this ripoff for except another one!!! Be forewarned!!!
