Amazon.com Review

Endorsed by the American Society of Travel Agents, Fodor's time-honored approach to travel is asserted through pragmatic advice that serves to make the new traveler feel more comfortable and the seasoned traveler make new discoveries. On every page there are practical ideas about how to get the most out of your visit to Italy, as found in this example from the introduction to Rome: "Remember, "Bisogna vivere a Roma coi costumi Roma" (When in Rome, do as Rome does). Rather than feel intimidated by the art and culture, contemplate the grandeur from a table at a sun-drenched café on Piazza Navona. There's just so much to take in that you will vow to return, and do so by throwing a coin in the Trevi Fountain--it works."

Fodor's 98 Italy begins with a comprehensive "Gold Guide," which includes tips and information that will answer your every question, from airports and travel gear to electricity and tipping. The well-organized chapters are arranged in order of tourist interest. The city chapters include an "Exploring" section that offers walking and driving tours listed by neighborhood. Each chapter begins with recommended itineraries and ends with "A-to-Z"--how to get there and around, as well as contacts and resources.

Dining and lodging options have personalized descriptions, including interiors, fun facts, and insider advice. If you don't feel much like making decisions, simply consult Fodor's Choices for the "perfect vacation" and consider your vacation planned. --Kathryn True

5.0 out of 5 stars So informative and easy to use!!, June 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Italy '98: The Complete Guide with the Cities, Lakes, Tuscan Hills and Baroque and Renaissa nce Treasures (Fodor's Gold Guides) (Paperback)
I've searched high and low for a great comprehensive travel guide for Italy in preparation for a summer abroad. I found the Fodor's Gold Guide to be the easiest to use, the most informative, and the most comprehensive. It details each region of Italy, great festivals and exhibitions opening or reopening in 1998, hotels and restaurants of varied cost, and all the travel quirks that one may run into. I think it's a great book and a great buy if you've got time to spend wisely in Italy...and if you don't it even includes potential itineraries for those working on a short clock. It's practically and encyclopedia...a full sized map and useful phrase dictionary are included at the back! THE BOOK TO BUY, I can't say enough about it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, April 23, 2010
This review is from: Italy '98: The Complete Guide with the Cities, Lakes, Tuscan Hills and Baroque and Renaissa nce Treasures (Fodor's Gold Guides) (Paperback)
I used this book in October 1998 and found it to be really good. In fact, as we were driving we'd get ideas from it when we'd see the name of a town coming up we'd check the book and often decide to stop at that town based on the information from the book. It contains copious amounts of information, even on smaller sized towns and regions. The maps are also useful. Twelve years later and I'm planning another trip to Italy and I'm going to bring the book along with me again. I will be bringing along another Fodor's Italy too. Happy traveling.
