Amazing Batá Players,
By
This review is from: Ito Iban Echu: Sacred Yoruba Music of Cuba (Audio CD)
Los Muñequitos de Matanzas continually put out amazing albums, and this one has to be one of their most unique and most exciting. Ordinarily, GOOD Orisha songs are hard to find - this album not only has incredible batá drumming, but the vocalists harmonize beautifully (a real rarity.) The first time I heard this album I got chills on my arms, indeed the Orishas are praised with this moving album.

My first cd that I had ever purchased by Los Munequitos de Matanzas was `Oyelos De Nuevo" and that cd although not directly Orisha Spiritual music, that cd blew my mind. So being a Leo, and as Leos are we have to get everything, that a certain artist has. So I purchased this cd, and of course being an Aborisha, a devotee to the Orisha Spiritual tradition, I was pleased to hear traditional and folkloric Afro-Cuban Santeria toques, batas, and cantos. My favorite track always seams to be the ones for Chango, and of course the one for Oggun. Which is a mix of Lukumi Chants mixed with some Spanish words. This cd, is just beautiful, and I highly have to recommend it.

One of My Favorite Orisha CDs,

I feel blessed that I purchased this CD when I lived in DC, and bought it after a phenomenal performance of Los Muñequitos. I have many CDs of Orisha music, and this is one of the most outstanding recordings in my collection.
It is one of the few CDs where the sound level of the Apuon and Coro (singers) seems balanced perfectly with the batá drums. In other Orisha CDs, the sound of the batá has sometimes seemed muffled instead of crisp and distinct. With this CD, I can FEEL the thump of the Iya drum, the kee-la of the okonkolo (the smallest drum). I feel like I'm standing next next to them. My favorite songs are Ogun Arere, Yemaya (Seco), Chango Eyeleo and Oya, but I'd give every song 5 stars. I also like the way the CD is organized, in that it also includes seco versions of songs (bata drums only). I will NEVER sell this CD!
