Amazing what can be conveyed from inside one house the whole movie. Initial tension turns to thought provoking results. One of those movies that stays with you a long time.

The movie makes you feel very uncomfortable for the David Cross character. This is a dark comedy and a great one. Very many good lines and a great story to boot. Way better that the "This is the End" crap movie. So much better. Shame this wasn't able to take it's place in the theaters. The ending is perfect.

A collection of couples get together for their regular couples lunch, and this lunch turns out to be anything but normal. An unexpected calamity has hit, and they are not only dealing with personal issues amongst the group, but dealing with getting information about the disaster, and figuring out how to survive. This quirky black comedy is well-cast and skillfully scripted, enabling it to be quite funny and entertaining. The mostly little known actors are perfectly cast in their roles. The film may be called It's a Disaster, however it is anything but. This is actually a pretty darn good movie.

I didn't like it, rented this movie because of the positive reviews, there were a few funny parts but mostly just boring and slow. It wasn't my kind of movie, that's about all I can say. I'm not very good at reviewing movies.

Several youngish couples gather for a regular Sunday brunch with the one unattached woman in the group bringing along a new boyfriend. Meanwhile, several dirty bombs have been dropped on the city and America is under attack.

Such is the premise for this black comedy which mocks the mating and social habits of thirty-something suburbanites trying to maintain viable and interesting long-term relationships and marriages while beset by triviality and boredom. The movie is well-written and well-acted and often very funny. Despite the cosmic events going on outside the duct-taped semi-detatched where all the action takes place, these couples remain fixated on their indiscretions and infidelities.

Another couple who always show up late are refused admission and left to die on the doorstep. "You're so inconsiderate. You never come on time. People cook food to be eaten hot and you never come on time," the Julia Stiles character tells her friend outside who is breathing nerve gas.

The new boyfriend turns out to be a scary Christian fundamentalist. The ditzy new age vegan woman is just as shallow as she seems. The nerdy one who buys comic books on e-bay is convinced aliens are attacking. The math teacher who has been engaged for six years but never set a date wants to be a dope fiend.

It's different and very good.

you don't see many of this type of movie any more. Seeing this, I'm not certain if that's a good or bad thing.

Here's the scoop. Four couples, some married some not, gather for a Sunday brunch. Before things get rolling stuff starts to happen. Cell phones, land lines, computers etc all go the fritz. It turns out dirty bombs have been detonated in various cities across the country and it's but a few hours before these folks have left to live. So what do they do?

As I mentioned this is an absurdist comedy. You start by meeting these people and you get a feel for the dynamic in place. Tracy (Julia Stiles) is bringing her new boyfriend Glen (David Cross) to introduce him to the crew. Shane (Jeff Grace) is there with his fiance Hedy (America Ferrera). They've been engaged for four years with no wedding date in sight. Emma and Pete Mandrake are hosting but have not told their friends of their impending divorce. Lexi and Buck Kivel are present and seemed to have seduced most everyone else there. So when the word comes down on what has happened these folks don't react in a way I'd figure most folks would react. It were almost as though it didn't happen. The attendee's pretty much keep up with the small time, petty b.s. they'd begun with. I have to assume that writer/director Todd Berger is presenting this as a sign of our times. The Shane character is way too absorbed in comic book culture. When he gets the news of the bombings he's trying to determine how long it is before people "turn" (into the walking dead I presume). And the Mandrakes, even though they are divorcing, are upset because they find out during all this that each has had an affair with one of the Kivels. This is all so counter-intuitive. It was tough to digest. I liked it.

I just watched this without really having heard or read much about it. And I have to say it was a truly pleasant surprise. The script is wonderfully sharp - the foibles of the characters are well drawn and the dialogue witty. Its a black comedy to be sure but hugely entertaining throughout. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to watch an intelligent and entertaining movie.
