The time Is finally here,
By Ralph McCurdy (Louisville, Kentucky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
It's been a long time coming to hear the Kit Kats singing all of their hits in stereo. They were one of the best groups, ever, local to the Philadelphia area. It brings back wonderful memories of a time past, listening to "Won't Find Better than Me", "That's The Way", "You Got to Know", "Let's Get Lost On A Country Road" and "Sea Of Love" (In my opinion, the best version ever recorded). They presented music that made you feel good just to hear. Ballads that talked about love, uptempo songs that made you want to hum along. New Jersey had "Eddie & The Cruisers", we were luckier, we had and continue to have the Kit Kats, the best there is

First Find This CD, Then "FIND SOMEONE" to listen with!,

This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
Growing up in Philly, I was a huge music fan, and my one goal in life was to join a group and become a band musician. Even before I was a teenager, there were certain songs, certain bands that I connected with, and The Kit Kats and their big hit, "Let's Get Lost On A Country Road" just knocked me over! I would wait by the radio to hear that song and back then it received a lot of airplay! SHAME on the local oldies stations here in Philly for neglecting this great song while playing "Heatwave" and some of their other *favored* songs 200 time a day!! (Another great local blockbuster of a song, one by Chubby Checker called "Rosie" is very neglected also! Remember that one folks? Shame on you oldies stations, and on you DJ's who play only what you have on your national song lists! That stinks!!!) Anyway, I was so crazy about The Kit Kats' song, "Let's Get Lost" that my brother bought it for me for my birthday!! Now that was a great gift. I considered that record a treasure. Being a music nut, I'd always check the "B" sides. (I'll bet some of you young whipper-snappers don't even know what a "b-side" is. OH well, I'm writing this for the crowd my age anyway.) As much as I liked "Let's Get Lost", my favorite song, of the two sides on this single quickly became the flipside, "Find Someone". People, let me tell you. I would play that song, over and over and over every day! I would sing along with it playing air banjo/air guitar thinking ahead to when I'd be in a great band like the Kit Kats. (Singing, "Don't sit there and stew, cause if you do..." To this day, I don't know if I got those lyrics right!) Both sides of that single truly helped to inspire me to go after my dream of being a musician in a band, and by the 70's sure enough I was in my own band, playing at... wow remember the club called Penny Lane in Jersey? How about The Bird's Nest in Manyunk owned by The Flyers' Don Seleski?! And remember The Old Tavern in Margate? And Roman Palace with the go-go girls! Those days were great fun, and The Kit Kats and their great music were an important part of my going on to become a musician. Really. Later I became a music instructor and began training tomorrow's band musicians (mini Kit Kats?), which I still do. But the lyrics on the Kit Kats' songs also, well, come on, you know, as a young man begin to notice girls and you need just the right words and music to go along with all of that. Pick up this great CD and you'll take a trip back to your own youth, to your past dreams to be lived all over again. Plus you'll have a bunch more great songs of The Kit Kats to listen to than the two I was able to fit in this small space to brag about... and really they are worth all the bragging! Listen for yourself, and then join me in calling and emailing our local radio stations and demand, "WE WANT THE KIT KATS!"

A Classic Philadelphia-Area Group!,
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
I wasn't even born yet when the Kit Kats were around, but my parents were (and still are, of course!) huge fans. We have been desperately searching for a Kit Kats CD for years now, and the wait has finally paid off! This is a phenomenal CD -- if you are a Kit Kats fan, you will be thrilled to hear "Let's Get Lost on a Country Road" as well as "Won't Find Better Than Me" along with dozens of other tracks -- cover songs and originals. If you are not familiar with the Kit Kats, this is just a purely great, fun CD -- it will bring you back to summers at the beach and lazy days at the shore -- they are the ultimate bar band of the 60's! I am a huge fan of "oldies" music so I got just what I was looking for when I ordered this. If you are also an "oldies" fan, you will thoroughly enjoy this CD! You will definitely listen to this and wonder why the Kit Kats never "made it big" . . . If you are from the Philadelphia area or frequent the Jersey (or Delaware) shore, you will be reminded of bar bands like Love Seed Mama Jump (one of my all-time faves), Mr. Greenjeans, etc. etc. etc. The Kit Kats started it all and they continue to be one of the best ever. Buy this CD! You will not be disappointed!

Wonderful 60's Pop, even if you're not from Philly!,
By Somewhere in Texas (Planet Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
I have a good friend who wrote a review and article for Goldmine magazine and I decided to take a chance on this 2-CD set. When I saw the cover I thought they would be a raw rough R&B-influenced East Coast "Garage Band" like The Young Rascals or Barry & The Remains...who were these guys? I grew up in the Southwest and I NEVER heard them on any oldies station or show.
Well, what a surprise! Wonderful falsetto harmonies, excellent in-band pop songwriting, fine musicanship plus an inspired and fun choice of "bar band" covers. Karl Hausman's unique piano playing is a highlight of almost every song on these CD's. My favorite cut from the many songs is the thunderous "Thats The Way" which sounds like the 4 Seasons or The Tokens locked inside Phil Spector's echo chamber. "Lets Get Lost on a Country Road" is a beautiful goose-bump inducing track that all fans of 60's "Soft Pop" will die for. I don't know why Jamie Records couldn't break this band across the USA. The Kit Kats were much better than many bands on larger labels. This is a excellent sounding and well put together compilation for all fans of 60's Pop, even if you didnt grow up in the Philly or New Jersey area.

Wow!! I have the 33 1/3 album of the music of the "Kit Kats "(actually "New Hope"). I've added this to my cart and can't wait til the end of the month to have it shipped. I'm also getting copies for my two daughters. I tried to make a copy onto tape for them one time, but was unsuccessful. They love the Kit Kats music too.Carl Hausman was my best friend growing up. I used to love to sit and listen to him practice, while waiting for him to go out and play stickball and other kid stuff on the streets of Fishtown (that's in Philly). I was always amazed at his talent. We used to collect old newspapers from neighbors in our wagons to recycle for a few cents. I, too, don't understand why they never made it nationally. I'm looking forward to hearing a clean copy of "Let's Get Lost On a Country Road" and "Won't Find Better Than Me" on the stereo in my SUV instead of the worn, scratchy record I have now. It will take me back to our days on Montgomey Ave. and the times I sat in his living room listening to him play. (It has been almost 50 years.)

Club Al-JO Revisited,
By Ralph J. Richards, Jr. (South Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
Growing up in Gloucester City, NJ I can remember Club AL-JO, Dick Lee's and The Crown Point Inn. Of all the bar bands and singers from this era and area the Kit Kats were the most talented and should have been much bigger nationwide. This CD is a step back to a time when you could sing along while you were dancing. Listening to the Kit Kats now I sing along while reclining in my Lazy Boy. Either way it is a CD for all generations to enjoy. If you read this and don't buy the CD you are losing out on a great piece of music history.

Memories of the Rip Tide,
By "carolmac50" (North Wildwood, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
Hearing this CD brings back memories of Sunday afternoon jam sessions at the Rip Tide in Wildwood back in the 60's - I met my husband of 32 years when I tried to get into the Rip Tide to hear the Kit Kats. The jingly sound of the honky tonk piano reminds me of one of the covers that the Kit Kats did that's not on this CD - Let's spend the night together - they did a great cover, were a great cover band as well as original songs. They shared the bill with the Reasons Why. The local oldies station in Wildwood still plays "Won't find better than me" and it transports me back. I agree with other reviewers - don't understand why the Kit Kats didn't go further. Highly recommend.

As a college kid in Lancaster, PA in the mid-60's, I was at the old Village every time the Kit Kats came to town, and it was never often enough. With Daisy Mae dancing and the band playing, life was good.
I agree with some of the other reviewers that these guys were ahead of their time. I wonder about their management, because when you look at some of the no-talent groups playing on a national stage at the time, why didn't these guys make it big-time? And right in Dick Clark's backyard. I have owned the alblum since its original relaese and regretted not playing it when the world moved to tapes and CDs. When a buddy told me about the CD, I thought I died and went to heaven. I'm not a mucician and can't talk about the technical aspects of their music. All I can tell you is the Kit Kats sounded great then and they still do on this CD. This is a must-have for anyone who loves good old-fashioned rock and roll.

Better then I thought it would be!,
By KATHLEEN ECKHART (Delanco, New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
I never thought that when I placed these CD's in the player that the memories would be more real then the day was. I was transported to a time of youth, love and wonder. To hear those songs once again and feel the love that ment so much to me as a young adult, made me wonder where the time has gone. The new releases that are in this 2 cd package, made me wonder all the more why this group never grew. All I can add is I thank heaven that they did record what they did, and that I can go down my County Road once again.

memories of my first love and I,
By KATHLEEN ECKHART (Delanco, New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
When this album was out, Bill and I were in love, and each others first true love. The song "Lets get lost on a county road", was our song, for I lived on a country lane, and he in a home that I could only then dream about. The times we spent walking our county road were special times then, and made all the more special when I walk down our "county road" full of memories. Why this group never became bigger then it did, is a shame. They had a sound that would of added a different sound to rock and roll, and bluegrass.Anyone who needs a walk down memory lane, only has to listen to the sounds of The Kit Kats. It not only makes the memories come alive again, it makes me forget that I can no longier walk our county road anymore. Keep the sounds comeing, as when you spend many days at home, and every day in pain, music makes me forget the pain for awhile. Thank |
