Wonderful about Life, Love and Kids!, October 25, 2008
There is nothing glamorous about Colette Caddle's books. No peek into a world we are not all well acquainted with. Caddle writes about so called ordinary people, people like you and me. And she does it exceptionally well. Just getting better and better with every book.
In "It's All About Him" we meet Dee, single mom, supporting herself and four year old Sam with her catering business and helping part time at her friend Lisa's crèche.
Dee struggles to make ends meet and also constantly worries about Sam's chronic asthma and eczema. Her farmer boyfriend Conor is a strong and stable part of her life, as are her close girfriends Lauren, Sheila and Lisa.
Altogether, life is not too bad for Dee and Sam. Her relationship with Conor adds joy and relief in her daily struggle and ever growing workload, although he has not yet popped THE QUESTION! Something which bothers Dee more than she is willing to admit, but which does not overly worry her. Conor is the quiet and stable sort. Adores Dee and is good with Sam. It will all happen in due time.
So lifes goes on in the little town of Banford, not far from Dublin. Until one morning the doorbell chimes at Dee's house. And after five years and not a word, there stands Neil. Sam's father and the man who broke Dee's heart, stole her money and left her alone in a foreign country. She got back to Banford alone and pregnant, had Sam and never heard another word from Neil.
What happens? I'll leave that to the reader. But even though Colette Caddle writes just as easily and entertaining as always, the book goes a little deeper than her previous ones. The characterization in particular, is very strong and calls for much afterthought. The story introduces many and very different personalities and there is no easy or predictable solutions to the many situations which arize.
Fans of Colette Caddle will not be disappointed. I fact, a hardcover purchase would have been money well spent and I hope her next book will be available in that binding. To new readers I can only recommend. An entertaining, yet realistic and wise book by a superb writer.
