The book I have been searching for...,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can empathize with the author, Ms. Collison, I too have been searching for the hairstyle book and the magazine that will lay it out for me. For more than 7 years, and four bi-racial children later (two boys and two girls), I had yet to find such a book. This book is truly the start of something good. It goes into detail, but not too much detail, how to care for a variety of hair textures "from bone straight to wavy, to tightly coiled and everything in between" (pg. 13). It covers parting to combing to cornrows, twists and braiding. It also covers some basic style for boys. I loved her personal stories, her own and contributors as well. I also appreciate how we are reminded to tell our daughters that they are beautiful and smart as we spend time together combing and styling their hair. As a librarian, I will be praising this book to all who walk through our doors and I look forward to the sequel. Way to go!

Don't buy this book if your child has short hair!,
This review is from: It's All Good Hair: The Guide to Styling and Grooming Black Children's Hair (Paperback)
I checked this book at the library and was so glad I didn't buy it. It had some really cute hairstyles but all the hair styles featured children with way past shoulder length hair. All the tips she gave were basic and stuff I already knew. She completely skipped toddlers. She had a small section on how to take care of babies hair and then jumped to pictures of older children with relaxed long hair. She had a small section for locked hair no section on nature hair and an area on how to relax your childs hair if her hair too nappy to comb. My daugher is only three. I was looking for tips to keep her hair healthy and to help it grow. She had one picture of a little girl with short braided hair and everyone else with hair down their back which is something most toddlers have yet.

I have been looking for a book like this for two years! I am the mother of a two year old adopted African-American daughter. One of my major concerns has been her hair. This book was awesome!!! It gives advice for birth on up. The pictures were great and the directions are easy to follow. I have had experience with braiding but this shows someone who hasn't, exactly what to do. It also gives advice on washing, combing and just about everything in between. I'm so glad someone finally wrote the book I have been waiting for!

This is one of the best how to books I have seen in awhile. It tells the tales that all of women have gone through at one time or another as girls. It gives you the strength to hold out on that relaxer. This is what alot of us need to hear. Kudos Michele

Finally, a Kiddie Hairdo Book That's ALL GOOD!!!,
This review is from: It's All Good Hair: The Guide to Styling and Grooming Black Children's Hair (Paperback)
I LOVE THIS BOOK! The hairstyle instructions are easy to follow; the information is comprehensive, covering everything from afros to zig-zag parts; and the personal anecdotes from real-life parents set it apart from most how-to hair books. I like that the author deals with hairstyles for girls AND boys, and I appreciate her taking time to offer tips for dealing with all types of hair textures. Most of all, I like that Collison urges readers to affirm their children's hair, no matter the texture, color or style. It is a must-have for any loving parent or childcare provider who is looking to instill positive self-image and grooming habits in children.

Not all Good...,

This review is from: It's All Good Hair: The Guide to Styling and Grooming Black Children's Hair (Paperback)
The pictures in this book are not very helpful when trying to recreate the styles. I purchased this book in order to gain ideas for hairstyles for my little ones. This book does contain pics of different styles, but it will only show the hairstyle from one angle. It may show a picture from either the front, side or back, but not from all three angles. If you just want to read a few stories about kids experiences with their hair, then purchase this book. If you are looking for pictures of hairstyles, consider yourself warned.

I got this book as soon as it came out and have used it for ideas on different styles. My 3 year old likes to look at the photos and dream of what I might be able to do to her hair (once it gets a bit longer for some of the styles). I would have liked some of the photos to be in colour because it's sometimes hard to figure out what's been done but most of the time there is a great explanation.

As a father with a 10-month old girl, this book was helpful for understanding basic hair care as well as offering some simple styles. If it had more information on braiding, it would be even more helpful as my daughter's hair is growing quickly and I am not completely familiar with braiding styles and options. The inclusion of the "old wives' tales" is a great feature that points out some myths about AA hair care. My mother-in-law read the book and laughed about all the "myths" recalling her own experience with her grandmother, etc., and then told me braid the baby's hair because "it will grow faster." This was a good book to get me started but next I will buy something with more explanations styles and how-to for braiding.

Good Guide Book,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: It's All Good Hair: The Guide to Styling and Grooming Black Children's Hair (Paperback)
I purchased this book for ideas on how to style my 4-yr. old daughter's hair. I has a few ideas, but the book is really for someone who does not know the first thing about grooming black hair. It is a good, guide book that takes you from infancy through the pre-teen years.
Reading the book with your toddler helps her to appreciate her hair type, and she can also select styles that she may want you to try on her. My biggest disappointment was that there were not enough pictures of different styles and how to do them. |
