The last time Eddie went for a walk in the woods, he had the biggest surprise of his life! There was a bear the size of a house in there! Now Eddie's mom is in the mood to picnic in the wood—and she insists there aren't any bears in there, (except Eddie's teddy, Freddie). But when Mom forgets the blueberry pie, she runs home to get it while Eddie waits in the woods all alone! What happens next? Just guess! Hold on to your teddies, because Jez Alborough is back with another hilarious story about little Eddie and that oversized bear—and this time he's hungry!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2?Eddie is not anxious to accompany his mother on a picnic in the woods because he knows there's a hungry bear out there. Mom thinks he is being silly, and has no qualms about leaving him alone for a few minutes while she runs home to get the blueberry pie she forgot. Of course she's barely out of sight when the huge brown bear smells the food and Eddie has to jump into the picnic basket to hide. As the creature begins to look for dessert, in the basket, Mom returns and manages somehow not to notice it. In a classic slapstick scene, she stands with her back to the slavering animal, who snatches the pie and runs (teddy bear in tow) in one direction, while mother and son run in another. The rhyming text is neatly boxed on each panel of illustration, which may be one scene or more on each two-page spread. The large format and colorful cartoons make this a good choice for reading aloud. A stand-alone sequel to Eddie's earlier adventure, Where's My Teddy? (Candlewick, 1992).?Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story for kids!, May 27, 2000
This review is from: It's the Bear! (Eddy & the Bear) (Paperback)
My three year old loves this story. Although he knows the plot by heart, he still eagerly awaits the turn of the page to see what is going to happen to the boy who is left in the woods with a bear. My son's favorite part is when the boy hides in the picnic basket from the bear. This is a great book to read with your kids because you can talk about it with them as the story progresses. This is a nice bear and a terrific story with beautiful illustrations. Highly recommended. Not limited to 3 year olds but older kids will also enjoy the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEARS LOVE BLUEBERRY PIE FOR DESERT, January 19, 2001
This review is from: It's the Bear! (Eddy & the Bear) (Paperback)
.

Eddy and Mum are off for a picnic in the forest, but Eddy's heard about the big bear that lives there. Mum assures him there's no bears around.

When all the picnic things are laid out Mum realises she's forgotten the blueberry pie and has to go home to get it.

Eddy is frightened and when he hears a voice say, "I can smell food" he decides to hide in the hamper.

Out of the woods came a big hungry bear (holding his own teddy!) and sits on the hamper to eat the picnic. After eating all the food he looks inside the hamper --- Eddy yells out for help.

Mum arrives and doesn't see the bear at first. Then he snatches the blueberry pie.

Of course our bear is harmless. A blueberry pie was the perfect desert after a picnic. It's just what he wanted. YUM YUM.

The illustrations in this book are fantastic. The large format works well, with each page varying in its layout. There's a mixture of frames; some laid out horizontally, others vertically on one page, or full panels on another. It's a very effective way to measure the pace and suspense of the story.

"It's the Bear!" is sure to become a classic. Look out for other Jez Alborough books.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Grown Daughter Still Remembers This, October 13, 2011
This review is from: It's the Bear! (Eddy & the Bear) (Paperback)
GREAT BOOK!! My daughter is writing a college paper and asked me to find the name of the "teddy bear picnic story". I took some doing but I recognized the cover of the book from reading it to my two kids again and again (so many years ago).

It's a classic - especially when you use different voices for different characters.

Have fun!
