5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story for kids!, May 27, 2000
My three year old loves this story. Although he knows the plot by heart, he still eagerly awaits the turn of the page to see what is going to happen to the boy who is left in the woods with a bear. My son's favorite part is when the boy hides in the picnic basket from the bear. This is a great book to read with your kids because you can talk about it with them as the story progresses. This is a nice bear and a terrific story with beautiful illustrations. Highly recommended. Not limited to 3 year olds but older kids will also enjoy the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEARS LOVE BLUEBERRY PIE FOR DESERT, January 19, 2001
.

Eddy and Mum are off for a picnic in the forest, but Eddy's heard about the big bear that lives there. Mum assures him there's no bears around.

When all the picnic things are laid out Mum realises she's forgotten the blueberry pie and has to go home to get it.

Eddy is frightened and when he hears a voice say, "I can smell food" he decides to hide in the hamper.

Out of the woods came a big hungry bear (holding his own teddy!) and sits on the hamper to eat the picnic. After eating all the food he looks inside the hamper --- Eddy yells out for help.

Mum arrives and doesn't see the bear at first. Then he snatches the blueberry pie.

Of course our bear is harmless. A blueberry pie was the perfect desert after a picnic. It's just what he wanted. YUM YUM.

The illustrations in this book are fantastic. The large format works well, with each page varying in its layout. There's a mixture of frames; some laid out horizontally, others vertically on one page, or full panels on another. It's a very effective way to measure the pace and suspense of the story.

"It's the Bear!" is sure to become a classic. Look out for other Jez Alborough books.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Grown Daughter Still Remembers This, October 13, 2011
GREAT BOOK!! My daughter is writing a college paper and asked me to find the name of the "teddy bear picnic story". I took some doing but I recognized the cover of the book from reading it to my two kids again and again (so many years ago).

It's a classic - especially when you use different voices for different characters.

Have fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Start, August 20, 2011

I love Jez Alborough's series about Bobo and his escapades and bought It's the Bear for my grandchildren who are 20 months. It is the first of three books about Eddie, his teddy, Freddie and a bear. It took the girls sometime to enjoy the book ( it's probably best enjoyed by 2-3 year olds ) but it is now a favorite and they want it read to them all the time. I love Alborough's illustrations and I love his sense of humor. I think sometimes the rhyming suffers but I wonder if he has changed some words for his US market. "Come" and "Yum" work better with "Mum" than "Mom". The typo mentioned several times in earlier reviews has been fixed and Eddie remains Eddie throughout. I enjoyed this book most of the three in the series but the others are great reads too, My Friend Bear especially, is very touching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute series of books, March 28, 2011

This review is from: It's the Bear! (Paperback)
A friend had given us "Where's My Teddy?" and we started showing it to our daughter when she was about 11 months old, maybe younger. She really liked it so I searched for the other 2 books in the Bear series. I bought a used copy from a private seller via Amazon and paid like 1 cent for the book, but more like $5 with all S&H/other fees. It arrived quickly and in good condition, but in hindsight, I wish I would have waited because I ended up finding an even better used copy in a used bookstore a couple of weeks later for $1.

Who wouldn't want to continue to read about Eddies' further adventures in the woods! This book is a follow up to Jez Alborough's "Where's My Teddy". Mayhem and madness in the woods. Join Mom, Eddie and his teddy Freddie for a picnic in the woods and of course a few surprises!

This book is a must buy for small children!

Our 2.5 year old adores this and other books by Jez Alborough. "It's the Bear" has lovely rhyming language, great illustrations and is a sure winner at bedtime.

The story itself provides opportunities for little ones to participate in punch lines and share their thoughts on what is going on in the pictures.
