Biography

Nominated for 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards!! Solo Artist of the Year and English Songwriter of the Year 2011.

Warm honey. That is the flow of a Mae Moore song. Her poetics provide the dynamic, and her voice is the sweet mellow stuff. Though it is tempting to compare her to other musical icons, Mae’s soulful blend of folk, jazz and roots is uniquely and potently her own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Music from Mae!, May 1, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: It's a Funny World (Audio CD)
A friend (okay his name is Kevin) first turned me onto Mae Moore when she released "Dragonfly" in 1995. I was immediately drawn to her music and her beautiful songs, and especially her voice - which at different times might recall Joni Mitchell or Sarah McLachlan or Shawn Colvin or even Madonna, but which really can't be compared to any of them because it has a personality all its own. On "It's a Funny World" she and her band truly shine, with fresh, stripped-down arrangements that showcase her voice and songs better than ever.

A few of the songs are new versions of older songs, and fit perfectly with the sound of the new material. "Red Clay Hills" from her first album is redone here with a funky country groove that takes the song to a whole new place. And "Only Man on Coney Island" is sounds like a jazz lounge standard that would fit in on a Diana Krall or Tony Bennett album.

But it's the new songs, like the title track and "Who Knows" that really shine and make you eager to hear what Mae will write next. These songs take you on a wonderful journey, one that I have been revisiting frequently since I first heard this collection, and look forward to revisiting. And any album that can do that is a winner in my book. The band sounds great, and the album's sound is just beautiful. Don't miss this album - definitely one of the best of 2002.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy purchase., March 2, 2004

I gave this 5 stars because it's definitely a fine album and any fan of Mae Moore will like it. 5-10 listens through I don't think that I like it as much as Dragonfly, but that's more a tribute to Dragonfly than a slight on this. My favorite on this one would be the newer rendition of Bohemia, which adds a fresh sound to the original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pop talent "unplugs" on latest album, June 13, 2002

This review is from: It's a Funny World (Audio CD)
Her 6th album (by my count) since 1989, "It's a Funny World" reworks some of her of her classics and adds some delightful new tunes.

What will you find on this album? First off, "It's a Funny World" is the most laid-back and mature of her recorded work to-date. For those of you who know Mae Moore, (and only Heaven and her record label knows why this Canadian artist is one of the best-kept secrets in the US), you are bound to be surprised by her sound on this new album.

Gone is the deep, rhythmic percussion and bass that underscored many of her songs on prior albums. A few songs had me digging up her "Bohemia" and Oceanview Motel" albums to compare these new performances (NOT simple re-mixes) with the earlier versions. "It's a Funny World" has an acoustic "unplugged" feel and a richer, more mature vocal sound on many tracks, with more conspicuous male vocal accompaniment in places.

My favourite track is "All I Have", an uplifting pop / jazz ballad accented by Mae's vocalese riffs and sweet saxaphone - it has a permanent place in my playlist.

Mae Moore has written the soundtrack to the last decade of my life. Newcomers to this versatile Canadian gem would do well to start with "Collected Works 1989-1999" for an overview of her pop songs. If you like a more mellow, mature acoustic / jazz feel, this is the album for you.
