From Publishers Weekly
That well-loved class of first-graders is delightful in another adventure, this one starring George. He's one of the slowest members of the class when it comes to spelling, handwriting and special projects. But George is a careful and attentive keeper of the classroom hamster and fish. Sometimes the other kids are impatient with him and even Anna Maria calls him "D-U-M"! Then one day, George doesn't come to schooland the first-grade class doesn't find out why until they watch the afternoon news on TV. George had stopped to visit an elderly friend on his way to school, and when the friend became ill, George called 911 and got help. The formerly scorned first grader is now a classroom hero. Cohen and Hoban's collaboration once again perfectly captures the essence of that all-important first year of school, with a zingy text and comic classroom pictures. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2 George is not ``smart'' at writ ing or at thinking up projects. As irre pressible Anna Maria announces deci dely, ``You can't get smart. You just are or you aren't.'' But George has oth er strengths. He knows the right way to take care of the animals in his class room. He also knows how to save the life of his elderly friend by telephoning the emergency number. Much to the delight of his classmates, George's quick thinking is spotlighted on the af ternoon TV news. A follow-up assem bly and newspaper photograph affirm George's special gifts. Cohen once again shows her sensitivity to the vari eties of children's strengths and strug gles as they adjust to school. Her chil dren are real and individual. Anna Maria has forgotten that she called George D-U-M and happily proclaims, ``He's in my class.'' Hoban's sketchy full-color watercolors capture the mul ti-ethnic first graders in all of their ac tivities and interaction. In tune with the text, Anna Maria's proud pose with George is a marvel of self-assurance. Another on-target story from a sensi tive author/illustrator team. Jane Sa liers, Highland Library, Atlanta
