PreS. This attractive, square board book introduces Hanukkah to young preschoolers with a very simple rhyming text and clear line-and-watercolor illustrations. On each left-hand page the pictures show a family celebrating with latkes, dreidels, coins, and dancing fun. On the opposite page is the menorah with the shammash, the candle used to light all the others, and one or more candles added for each of the eight days. The candles are a colorful array of hues, and their flames are shiny cutouts. The rhyme is sometimes awkward, but the pictures are informal and fun, and the repeated chant ("Do you know the reason why? / It's Hanukkah tonight") will have kids joining in. Adults will need to fill in some background; it's the joy that's paramount here. Hazel Rochman

Great 1st Hanukkah book,

The rhymes are a little awkward, but my almost-2-yr-old loves the illustrations and asks for this nightly as we approach the Holiday. She touches the candles and clearly registers the increase in number as the rhyme unfolds. This is NOT the story of Hanukkah, instead it describes the holiday activities in a way a toddler can comprehend.
