5.0 out of 5 stars Kind, funny, commonsense advice for the packrats among us, July 2, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
Does the idea of spring cleaning tempt you to commit arson rather than send you to the store for Windex? Have you ever replaced a set of keys or your drivers' license because it was in your house SOMEWHERE, and it might as well have been dropped by parachute over Mali for all the likelihood of finding it? Help has arrived. This book may be the best first-class ticket out of overpowering mess that's currently available. It's Here..Somewhere details a sane, workable system for reducing clutter. The simple room-by-room outline of the plan, together with scheduling suggestions and survival tips, make it possible to revamp even the worst snarl of stuff without letting the rest of your life get out of control in the process. Best of all, the hidden areas that tend to collect mess, like closets, storage areas, and laundry rooms, are each given their own section rather than being dismissed as out of sight and out of mind. You'll find space you didn't even know you had

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Here Somewhere, December 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
I love this book! It was the first book on organization I ever purchased, and I wouldn't be without it. It makes the awesome task of decluttering your entire home very manageable. The process is broken into easy steps, and once you get going, you can't believe you lived with clutter all your life prior to buying this book. I've read many other books, but this one is one of the best. I do have one caution. The first time I read the book, and went through the process, I followed every "rule." Basically, their motto is, "Get rid of everything you don't use, like, have room for, need or want." I got rid of binoculars (because I hadn't used them up to that point), a set of ivory dominoes (that I didn't know were ivory, until after I sold them,--because I didn't play dominoes), an antique 1 cent NYC parking meter (because it was my husbands before we got married, and we lived in a small apartment, and I had know emotional attachment to it, etc. So there are some things you keep, just because, even if you don't need them or think you don't have room.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has changed my life!, July 13, 1998

This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
Really! Some of the additions are corny (I could have done without lessons on stencilling and other home decor) but the underlying principles and laws are sound.

I am the daughter of two depression-era parents who saved EVERYTHING (you never know when you might need 5,670 rubber bands) and this book has helped me realize that those holey, stretched out panties will never renew themselves, no matter how long I leave them in my drawer.

After ruthlessly streamlining my house, I've gone back and have actually streamlined some more. I have empty drawers now (a lifetime first). We're about to move into a loft apartment, smaller than our current place, and this book has made me much more comfortable about the move, because I realize I didn't really need the three closets-full of outdated clothes I'll never get back into (and wouldn't even if I could) and the 5 rusty can openers.

This is a great book for helping gain control, recognizing that no system of organization (color coded, alphabetized) will work if there's just too much stuff to begin with.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to streamline so that cleaning is easy, August 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
I've read many books on how to organize, how to declutter, etc. but have found none to be as straight forward and helpful as this one. The authors do not spend too much time trying to entertain, they teach. Perhaps there are many others out there who are not messy as much as they are overwhelmed with where to put stuff. This book helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book!!, June 9, 2001

This book was a huge help. They help you to look at EVERY area of your home. The book is laid out very simple and you can skip over the chapters that don't pertain to your own home. They did offer some advice that I don't agree with (I don't agree with getting rid of EVERYTHING) and the idea of hanging drawstring bags on the inside of every closet door?? (I think that sounds a little tacky.) But, other than that this book is a quick read, which is helpful so you can get started right away! I defintly recommend this book to anyone trying to get organized!

5.0 out of 5 stars Organize Every Area In Your Home, January 2, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
This book will show you how to deal, once and for all, with chronic clutter, lack of space, and the irritating lost-and-found pattern in your home. This book will show you how to put your home in order and keep it that way. The authors have added one vital step, not normally found in a book of this type. They show you how to find more places to put stuff by simplifying first, then organizing.

Learn of the authors easy eight-step system for simplifying any room in your house.
Step 1. Prepare your family
Step 2. Collect containers
Step 3. Work in a clockwise pattern
Step 4. Evaluate and assign
Step 5. Ask yourself the right questions
Step 6. Group and store like items together
Step 7. Use memento boxes for sentimental items
Step 8. Enjoy the empty space

On your mark, get set, go .... It is best to purchase this book as a household reference book. Copies are currently available on Amazon at under $4.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Final Word of Clutter and Space Management!, June 15, 2009
This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
I've read everything out there on clutter and space management and this is by far the best that's been written. This teaches "streamlining" as opposed to "organizing". They tell you to get rid of things first, then organize what's left. They give specific ideas on what to do with spaces. It's witty, clear, and concise. Each chapter is a different area or room in the home, so if you don't have that room or area, you can skip that chapter. It first came out in 1985--so you know the authors are hitting a nerve and delivering solid answers, or it wouldn't have been around so long.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Nail It!, October 15, 2011
This review is from: It's Here...Somewhere (Paperback)
This is the best book I've ever read on dealing with clutter, and there are a boatload of clutter and organization books out there. These gals get right to the heart of the matter and give clear and practical suggestions for getting control, once and for all (just like the blurb on the book says), of clutter and spaces. I love that they don't play patty-cake with the reader by telling us to just store things we don't know what to do with for a year, and THEN get rid of them. It's the procrastination of deciding what to do with things that gets us into our messes in the first place. I LOVE this book--I understand they speak on the subject, and if they ever come remotely close to where I live, I'm there!
