Book Description

Half-Cuban, half-Puerto Rican, Luis "DJ Disco Wiz" Cedeño is 100 percent Boogie Down Bronx. Born in the 60s, Wiz struggled in a turbulent and violent relationship with his alcoholic father while trying to protect his mother who was suffering from breast cancer. Raised in the 70s, Wiz learned the code of the streets while hustling with his crew, the East Side Boys. In 1975, Wiz discovered salvation when he hooked up with the legendary Grandmaster Caz to form the Mighty Force Crew, waging some of the biggest DJ battles in the Bronx during hip hop's earliest years.

When Hip Hop first hit, the DJ was king. Rockin' the party on two turntables for the b-boys and fly girls on the dance floor, DJs like Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash pioneered an art form that has come to define our times. The first Latino DJ in the game, Wiz, along with Caz, went on to make a "mixed plate" in 1977 which combined sound bites, special effects, and paused beats. An innovator, originator, and a battle-style DJ with no fear, Wiz swept through the Bronx like a tornado.

But the streets wouldn't leave him in peace. After being convicted on an attempted murder charge, sentenced to nine years in prison, and forced to leave his baby daughter, Wiz was incarcerated upstate at the tender age of 17, where he learned the true meaning of desperation. But as time went on and he overcame his struggles with violence, drugs and alcohol, and women, Wiz eventually liberated himself from the path of self-destruction through love, self-respect, and self-determination.

It's Just Begun: The Epic Journey of DJ Disco Wiz, Hip Hop's First Latino DJ is a gritty and gripping tale of one man's struggles to not only survive, but to triumph over adversity and abuse that will make your blood run cold. By conquering unimaginable obstacles, Wiz offers inspiration to anyone who has ever wondered, "Why me?"

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!!!! February 18, 2014
The book is addicting, from beginning to end. Luis "DJ Disco Wiz" Cedeno takes you on journey through the life and times of growing up in the Bronx during the uprise of Hip Hop, Bboy crews, DJing and the struggle to maintain perseverance through it all. The book is so detailed, that I actually felt like I was walking side by side with Luis and witnessed every moment. I gained a new respect for Hip Hop and the legends that started it. I gotta give it up for Luis Cedeno for a superb work of art and gift to reach the heart with his life experiences growing up in Hip Hop's melting pot, the Bronx.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Just Begun May 8, 2009
"It's Just Begun" is one of the most compelling books I've read. The struggles of and in depth look at the beginnings of the Hip Hop culture and movement are fascinating. Disco Wiz's tale had me laughing and cringing in the same paragraph. The life he endured to become the contributor and man he is today is an epic, life changing story.

There were times I actually put the book down and didn't want to read it anymore because of how difficult it was to read about the situations he experienced, but it's such a fascinating story that I had to finish reading less than 24 hours.

"It's just begun: The epic Journey Of Disco Wiz, Hip Hop's First Latino Dj" is a must-read, not only for Hip Hop historians, but avid book readers the world over.

5.0 out of 5 stars DJ Disco Wiz-Emotionally uplifting May 8, 2009
How fortunate I was to get a preview of Its Just Begun, several months ago. After reading just a snippet, it was torture waiting for my copy.

The emotion in this book is tangible. The real life experiences, even greater than one can conceive. Only life's warriors make it out of adversity, like this.

Anybody, from any walk of life, will find superb value in Wiz's memoir. I have refreshed hope in what determination and the human spirit is capable of. The book had me smiling, (and tearing), and I'm STILL looking forward to reading it again. I always do a double-take on a classic.

Its Just Begun is a long-awaited addition to my collection of books from Hip-Hop's pioneers.

Hats off to DJ Disco Wiz and Ivan Sanchez.

Go get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars review of "it's Just Begun" April 29, 2009
In one sentence, DJ Disco Wiz will rip out your heart. In the next, his observation of the circumstance will bring tears of laughter. How he navigated off the path of destruction testifies to the character of his spirit and the power love has to heal.

His book is a song of the unsung, caliing out to the thousands of kids who search for direction and adults who've suffered for years from violent hands. Wiz was that lost boy, and was that traumatized adult. His harrowing story makes his kindness, generosity and wisdom that much more remarkable. See Wiz mentor a troubled teen and you'll understand caring. See him perform on stage and you'll understand passion and innovation. Read his book and you'll understand tenacity and hope.

The story of DJ Disco Wiz isn't over. His life has just begun.

Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I must say that this book is a must read. I am not a reader by nature and I have to make myself read books for school but it was different with this book. I was given a chapter to read for my music empowerment class and I was hooked after I was done and I wanted to continue reading it so I went ahead and bought it and made it a final project for class.

I enjoyed reading the book from start to finish. This is the first book that I read in its entirety in a very long time. I could not put it down and read it everywhere. I thoroughly enjoyed the rawness of DJ Disco Wiz and how his life was told without holding back. I can picture the different scenes through out the book coming to life.

If you love hip hop or are just interested to learn about the pioneers and how the movement was started, please buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

Thank you for reading this post and hope it helps.

More About the Author

DJ Disco Wiz (born Luis Cedeno), was born in the Bronx, New York, USA, to a Puerto Rican father and a mother from Cuba. He is also credited with being the first Latino DJ in Hip-Hop music.

After being inspired at a Kool Herc jam by the emerging hip hop movement taking place in The Bronx DJ Disco Wiz teamed up with his best friend, Casanova Fly (Grandmaster Caz), to form a group called the Mighty Force crew. Mighty Force is credited as being one of the first Hip-Hop DJ crews in the mid-to-late 1970s. Legendary for their DJ battles in the streets of the South Bronx, the Mighty Force crew was also responsible for presenting the first Latino rapper to the world, Prince Whipper Whip, who is also of Puerto Rican decent. DJ Disco Wiz is also credited for being the first DJ to create a "mixed plate" in 1977 (hip-hop's first mixed dub recording) when he and Grandmaster Caz, combined sound bites, special effects and paused beats.

The grandson of the late Puerto Rican artist and Santero Norberto Cedeno, Wiz is the creator of The Hip-Hop Meets Spoken Wordz Series, a hip-hop and poetry performance series that gives a voice to up and coming Latino talent in New York City. Wiz has openly contributed to the community education of the formative years of Hip-Hop. In the millennium issue of The Source magazine he candidly shared his experience in being the first Latino during the culture's evolution. He was also a major contributor in the opening of the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington in 2000. His contribution and donation of original hip-hop flyers, solely for the preservation of hip-hop can be seen as part of the archives.
