Book Description

July 2002
It’s Just Shopping is a critical history lesson and an essential how-to for merchants, marketers, technologists and educators interested in successful online selling. It provides an insider look at shopping online via 7 straightforward modules that delve into today’s multi-channel world.

In 10 years time B2C Internet sales have grown from 0 to $33 billion. This is the first book to examine its evolution from the perspective of the merchant and the shopper. Written by Lauren Freedman and published by The Direct Marketing Association, it is a "Hitchhikers Guide to E-commerce", abundant with lessons from a time when there was no roadmap.

Case studies examine best-of-breed strategies currently being employed. Proven checklists plus tips and techniques with bottom-line thinking provide actionable pointers that merchants can apply to enhance their merchandising strategies.

The evolution of The Changing Channels, from retail to catalogs, demonstrates that throughout time, successful merchandising starts with The Chameleon Shopper and culminates with the experience created by The Consummate Merchant - regardless of channel.

The e-tailing group’s proprietary Merchandising and Mystery Shopping Research set the stage for The Art of Merchandising Online and The Challenge of Customer Service while a 3-channel and an Internet timeline chronicle key events and milestones.

Industry pioneers share personal experiences in colorful interviews plus snapshots of today’s category killers and survivors who participated in the surge for customer acquisition and retention are showcased. 1-800-Flowers, Eddie Bauer, JCPenney, The Sharper Image, eBags, Lands’ End and RedEnvelope are among the merchants whose struggles and awesome accomplishments are featured. Learn from their legacies then look ahead to the future of Internet shopping.

About the Author

LAUREN FREEDMAN President, the e-tailing group, inc. In 1993, with over 15 years in the Retail and Catalog industry, Lauren Freedman believed that merchandising would be the key differential for the newly emerging e-commerce industry. With unparalleled dedication, commitment and vision, she headed into uncharted territory to found the e-tailing group, inc.

Her conviction, emphasizing category rather than channel, soon proved successful for e-tailing group clients seeking to better understand and capitalize on online selling. From Fortune 500’s to start-ups, she has helped shape many of the Retail and Internet industry’s most prolific sites and largest initiatives. From involvement with the initial launch of sites like Toys "R" Us and The Vitamin Shoppe, to specific projects for clients including USA Today, CTW, Microsoft Network Shop@Kodak and Blue Martini, Freedman has served as strategist, facilitator, educator and/or merchant partner. Over the course of the e-commerce evolution, Freedman has been an active industry leader, spokesperson and visionary.

Published works include the e-tailing group’s Mystery Shopping & Merchandising Scans, a series of industry benchmarking research studies, as well as the eguides 1.0 and 2.0, interactive workbooks for merchants developed in partnership with ClearCommerce, Hewlett-Packard, Visa and First Data. Freedman most recently completed her first book, It’s Just Shopping, published by The Direct Marketing Association. It provides a comprehensive; behind-the-scenes look at some of the most successful multi-channel strategies as well the biggest blunders in online selling. From pre-Internet to forecasting future trends, it is a critical history lesson and an essential how-to-guide for successful online selling.

As a recognized trend expert and veteran of the Retailing and Internet industries, Freedman is a frequent resource to the trade and national press. Feature articles have appeared in The Chicago Tribune, U.S. News & World Report, Internet Retailer, Catalog Age and other leading business publications. She has worked with leaders in Direct Marketing, Retail and the Internet industries and has spoken extensively throughout the world on The Art of Merchandising Online, industry trends and her online retail experiences.

A former buyer/merchandiser for department and specialty merchants and owner of her own contemporary clothing store, she continues to remain as deeply passionate about merchandising and selling online as she was when she launched the e-tailing group.

Freedman resides in Chicago with her husband.
