Back again in paperback is It's Kwanzaa Time!, an entertaining collection of stories, songs, activities, games and recipes that focus on and explain the seven principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, responsibility, cooperation, purpose, creativity and faith.

The lively text of It's Kwanzaa Time! and the illustrations by award-winning artists Jerry Pinkney, Ashley Bryan, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Floyd Cooper, Jonathan Green, and Leo and Diane Dillon bring together the sights, sounds, smells and flavors of Kwanzaa in one volume. It's fun to read aloud and the whole family can participate together.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW called this a "comprehensive volume," filled with stories (one for each of the holiday's seven days), songs, recipes and crafts projects, as well as entries by Jan Spivey Gilchrist and Eloise Greenfield, and full-page paintings by such artists as Leo and Diane Dillon, Jerry Pinkney and Floyd Cooper. All ages.

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-7. Although the Gosses present a very brief history of Kwanzaa, a song, recipes, a game, and simple patterns for African-style clothing, the real reason to buy this book is for the wonderful stories that have been selected to match the seven principles of the Kwanzaa celebration. Linda Goss' skill as a storyteller is evident in the five folktales, which read aloud beautifully and offer a mix of humor and insight. "Rabbit at the Water Hole" requires audience participation and would be great fun at a family party or in a classroom. Eloise Greenfield's story about Rosa Parks and Clay Goss' poem "Keep the Faith, Baby" complete the literary offerings. Brilliant, full-color illustrations by noted African American artists Ashley Bryan, Carole Byard, Floyd Cooper, the Dillons, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Jonathan Green, and Jerry Pinkney accompany the stories, and an extensive bibliography is provided. Chris Sherman --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Great book for beginners or on going Kwanzaa observers. Informative and clear on the seven principal days, symbols, recipes and sewing instructions to make your own African outfits. An valuable and creative resource book. A perfect storyteller resource book as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Kwanzaa Time, July 6, 2009
This review is from: It's Kwanzaa Time! (Paperback)
The book uses stories to provide examples of how celebrate Kwanzaa. During Kwanzaa celebrations, a poster of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, Nguzo Saba, are displayed on the wall. According to Linda and Clay Goss, Dr. Karenga added the extra " a" at the end of Kwanzaa so that word would have seven letters to go with the seven principles and symbols. Watoto mean children. Twi is spoken in Ghana
