Book Description

March 20, 2007

Beautiful River joins a stick-up crew, but she doesn't know that Big Red and Twinkie have a secret that even she's not in on. When she falls in love with Eric, one of her victims, all she wants is to find her baby sister, and settle down with her new love.  But River soon becomes a prisoner of her dangerous world. And escaping it may cost her more than her life.

By the time she turns sixteen, Starr is working for a pimp and turning tricks daily.  But when an assault by one of her “dates” lands her in the hospital, Starr meets a woman who wants to help her change her life.  Starr’s heart is too hardened to believe in second chances, but soon she begins to long for more than selling her body just so she can survive. However the game does not give up its players so easily.

Enter Eric’s cousin, Yung Slim, fresh out of jail after seven years.  He’s looking to reclaim the streets and take care of some old grudges. When Yung Slim goes to battle, Eric—torn between his love for River, his ties to his cousin, and the lure of the streets—gets in too deep. When the war breaks out on the battlefield of the streets, who will be left standing?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sex, violence and crime dominate Gray's fifth novel, a wild trip through Jamaica, Queens, that reads not unlike a novelization of a Jay-Z album. Eric, a smalltime hustler who sells marijuana and promotes underground parties, is content with his low-key life until he meets River, a stunner who captures his heart and libido. River, it turns out, is a hustler in her own right, and sets up Eric for her two male partners to assault and rob, but even the $35,000 take can't blunt the feelings River has for her mark. Meanwhile, River's younger sister, Starr, a 16-year-old prostitute hospitalized after a run-in with a violent john, wants out of the life. Eric's cousin Russell, paroled after seven years in prison, is hell-bent on retaking the Queens neighborhoods he once ran. Though Gray's not the sharpest stylist, he keeps the story moving, and as the narratives converge, he pours on the luridness. The characters are thin, but the atmosphere is frighteningly seductive. Street lit fans will definitely want to take a look. (Mar.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Juicy, August 11, 2007
This review is from: It's Like Candy: An Urban Novel (Paperback)
This book took the mean streets of Queens, NY to another level. River is a hustler who knows nothing but sex, money, and drugs. She was abused sexually, mentally, and physically by her mother at a young age along with her sister, Star. River gets feed up with her mother and decides to make it on her own in the streets. Star is left behind - with the abuse.

River meets Big Red and Twinkie who takes her in and guide her on the streets. Big Red is an aggressive man who develops strong feelings for River but tries to hide them to the GAME. Twinkie is Big Red's right hand man and together makes them unstoppable in the streets. They begin their hustle in the streets by using River as bait to rob and terrorize "Tricks".

Star life is hell as she is left behind with her sick mother. Star is doing things that adults do at a young age. She is very miserable and wants a better life. She then leave but will she survive on the streets?

River then meets Eric and gain feeling for him - however, he is the assignment. Yung Slim is a PIMP who takes Star under his wing into a life of prostitution. Will Star and River ever reunite?

This book gets better at the end. It has many twists that you have to read it to understand it. I recommend this book to other and await the auther's - Erick S. Gray next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Love Calls......, July 11, 2007
This review is from: It's Like Candy: An Urban Novel (Paperback)
I loved this book soooooo much! Excellent from cover to cover! River and Starr both had it hard and it all worked out at the end. I loved Eric and how he sacrificed everything for the woman he loved. This book has more twists and suprises than you are going to know what to do with! Most definitely deserving of 5 stars! This book was straight fire!

4.0 out of 5 stars Encore! Encore!, June 12, 2007
This review is from: It's Like Candy: An Urban Novel (Paperback)
This book needs to be a movie!! It had all the ends and outs of a great movie script. I would love to see this movie put on the big screen. This was a tale of suspense, crime, abuse, murder, betrayal, and love. The only drawback that I found was that I thought Eric's character was a tad bit weak. I would have liked to have seen him be much more rugged and thugged out than he was. But all in all, this was a good read. There was a lot going on in the story which I liked. This is only my second book by Eric Gray (Booty Call was my 1st and I LOVED IT!!). His writing style keeps my attention. Nasty Girls is next on my list!
