Book Description

October 12, 2011
True modernity requires much more than discipline, vision, and a willingness to live without upper kitchen cabinets. It's Lonely in the Modern World outlines exactly what's required to achieve sleek design and the requisite ennui. From the creators of the wildly popular Web site Unhappyhipsters.com, this essential guide is for today's hipsters what The Official Preppy Handbook was for prepsters. The authors advise on a number of topics. Readers will learn how to navigate the vast array of concrete finishes and plywood grades, accessorize with children and pets, opine with authority on rooflines. Featuring detailed illustrations, beautifully staged photos, and helpful charts, this master manual is perfect for aspiring modernists, those who love them, and, of course, those who love to hate them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"'It's Lonely in the Modern World: The Essential Guide to Form, Function, and Ennui from the Creators of Unhappy Hipsters,' a satisfying send-up of a design primer, presents lessons in hostile faucetry, blinding fluorescents and vicious exposed ductwork." - The New York Times

"[It's Lonely in the Modern World] would be a good gift for anyone who knows that they may be taking design just a teeny but on the too-serious side; it's got great photos, a nice looking layout, and just enough tongue-in-cheek humor mixed in with real style to make it an entertaining yet aesthetically pleasing read- ApartmentTherapy.com

"The Unhappy Hipsters sensibility has a different groove in book form from the website...the book plays the joke exceedingly close to the line of sincerity. It may be part of the joke to catch a few modern enthusiasts unaware by disguising the book as a bona fide guidebook." -Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"It's Lonely in the Modern World... takes the ennui to new heights." -Babble.com

From how to choose the perfect color of concrete to using your pets as decor, Unhappy Hipsters will reward you with untoward design knowledge. Keep up with and beat the Jones's with this utterly indispensable, insightful, and inexplicable handbook for designing your modern home. Perfect for the DIYer who is too cheap to hire out for quality craftsmanship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and funny with awesome illustrations January 20, 2012
Format:Paperback
I love this book! Its just as funny as the blog and includes all of these great illustrations. It also has the same beautiful photography as the blog complete with lots of unhappy looking folks. I also think this makes a perfect gift for a lover of home design because it also has a ton of really interesting information.
