5.0 out of 5 stars Cher's Best Work
It's sometimes hard to decide which version of Cher's IT'S A MAN'S WORLD is better, the US version or this, the import. While the domestic release seemed to be going for a more R&B slanted feel, the import adheres a little more closely to the pop/rock work of her late eighties albums, the main difference being that the songs are of far higher quality. Cher went to England and recorded "It's A Man's World" which stands as one of the greatest albums of the DIVA'S brilliant career that should have become the International comeback that "Believe" ultimately became but a weird and unnecessary remix of the U.K. classic is believed to be the reason this project didn't create a much deserved comeback...many feel that for some strange reason Cher's brilliant moment was sabotaged and anyone who listens to the original U.K. release which is soulful and brilliant then puts on this bizarre one tone "U.S. Edition" will come to the same conclusion. All the guts is removed along with the great rhythm tracks which make the U.K. release a complete soul stirring masterpiece so get the U.K version and enjoy Cher in her finest hour at her absolute peak!!! Please release the ORIGINAL~Cher doesn't deserve having one of her finest recorded masterpieces desecrated!!!!!

While the domestic release seemed to be going for a more R&B slanted feel, the import adheres a little more closely to the pop/rock work of her late eighties albums, the main difference being that the songs are of far higher quality. This version contains the original versions of 'Angels Running','Paradise Is Here','Not Enough Love In The World' and the far superior take on the set's first single 'One By One', as well as three additional tracks. Those acquainted only with the American release would do well to investigate this equally strong disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING IMPORT MASTERPIECE~BRAVO CHER!!!, May 13, 2004

This is the totally awesome masterpiece that Cher recorded in England which should have been the major recording comeback that "Believe" ultimately became! If this original classic had been released in the U.S., this strong set that opens with a soulfully stirring "Walking In Memphis" would have put Cher back on top before "Believe" did!! Don Henley's "Not Enough Love In The World" is incredibly moving and easily the definitive version becomming a solid Cher classic and the great "One By One" is a haunting rhythm rocker that would have been a huge #1 hit had this great version been given single release instead of the watered down U.S. remixed version that totally missed the mark...why and how did this unnecessary remix happen and who was responsible for it and what were they thinking? Next is a wildly funky and very soulful rocker that wasn't even on the "U.S. Edition" and Cher has never sounded finer than she does on the bluesy "I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)" which makes good use of the repeat mode. Out front with another soulful vocal make "Angels Running" another winner and "Paradise Is Here" show Cher in peak form making it clear that there is not one throw away song on this mesmerizing and classic set...anyone listening will be blown away by Cher's passionate and stunning vocal on the incredible "I'm Blown'Away" while she is equally magnificient on the soft-rocking "Don't Come Around Tonight" which sounds like another huge "hit" that should have happened!!! Hauntingly gorgeous is Cher on the intoxicating "What About The Moonlight" while longing and realization make "The Same Mistake" a stunning classic. "The Gunman" is Cher at her soulful and haunting best turning in one of the finest vocals of her brilliant career while her masterfully stirring vocal on the evergreen "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" easily matches the great Frankie Valli original. Simply said, there is no topping the great Cher in this masterful set of extraordinary and diverse performances and this is one of her greatest ever! "Shape Of Things To Come" is another soulful rocker with Cher totally mesmerizing while the closing "It's A Man's World" for this music lover easily matches the great original...get this IMPORT classic while you can as it doesn't get better than this...and WARNER BROTHERS, for all that Cher has done for you over the years you owe it to Cher and her audience to release this masterpiece in this great original form...one of the all time classics~BRAVO CHER...you rock!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Cher's World, April 22, 2004
This review is from: It's a Man's World (Audio CD)
It's a pity that this album being so good didn't have success. In the U.S debuted at #64 in the Hot 200 but dropped very fast. And in Europe called some attetion but it wasn't a hit.
This album has a different direction from all Cher albums. It's softer with strong letters but you won't find electric guitars as in many of her cd's or Cher screaming but it doesn't either go to boring.
The first single was "One by one" that apperead on the soundtrack of Cher's HBO movie "If walls could talk". The song climed some charts but it's not considered a hit.
That's the commercial information that I can give you about the album.
But from my point of view as a custumer I can say that's it's a very good album, Cher's performances are clean and excellent.
The best songs are: "One by one", "Not enought love in the world", "What about the moonlight" and "The same mistake".
For this production Cher made 2 covers. The first is Tina Turner's 1986 hit "Paradise is here" which is the song with more rhythm in the album. Actually Cher changed the style of the song. Tina's version was soft, a pure ballad. And Marc Cohn's "Walking in Memphis" which sounds very good.
You won't be sorry at all with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest releases of the 90's!, February 9, 2000

This review is from: It's a Man's World (Audio CD)
This release is amazing by the sheer energy of Cher's vocals, the fine balance between her voice and backing vocals, and the diversity of musical choices. "It's a Man's World" UK edition is far superior to the U.S. domestic release. For one thing, this CD contains 14 songs and the U.S. version has only 11. Plus, the U.K. version is "cleaner" vocally, not drowning out Cher's voice as often happens in the U.S. domestic version.

The songs that are not on the U.S. version are: I Wouldn't Treat a Dog (The Way you Treated Me) Don't Come Around Tonite Shape of Things to Come

Plus the following songs are in their originally released format:

Not Enough Love in the World Angel's Running What About the Moonlight? Paradise is Here One By One The Gunman

The other songs are identical on both UK and US versions. For the true Cher fan, the original is the one to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one CD that should not be overlooked!, September 22, 1999

This review is from: It's a Man's World (Audio CD)
With all the recent hype and popularity surrounding Cher's recent CD, "Believe", many people are becoming Cher fans. You may be familiar with the 60/70's Cher, and probably even listened to her during the late 80's, during whice she had such hits as "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Jesse James". But, if you have a missing gap of about 8 years, you need to get "It's A Man's World". This is one album that is full of emotional and soulful songs. The songs range from the slow "The Gunman" to the ballad "I'm Blowing Away" to the choir embellished "Walking In Memphis". One of the bestsongs is "One By One". This is one album that is worth taking a listen to and is worth buying to have for your own personal collection. A 5 star CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cher:- It's A Man's World (US edition), August 20, 2005
This review is from: It's a Man's World (Audio CD)
The US edition of Cher's It's A Man's World album is not the best version to get. While it still deserves 3 stars for the tracks that aren't touched and remixed, most of the tracks that are remixed are dissapointing. I also recommend the UK album, because there's 3 songs on that version that don't appear on this one:- I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me), Don't Come Around Here Tonite (yes, I spelt it right) and The Shape Of Things To Come, which was actually one of my fave songs on the whole album, and because this edition doesn't have that song, it sounds incredibly dull without it! It's A Man's World is one of Cher's most under-rated albums, and hit #64 stateside, and #10 in the UK.

ONE BY ONE
Remix. While the original version is better, I quite liked this urban version. Hit #52 in the US, and #7 in the UK.

NOT ENOUGH LOVE IN THE WORLD
Remix. While the lyrics are nice, the remix itself is dissapointing. Original version is alot better.

ANGELS RUNNING
Remix. The original version is amazing, and was definately the best song on the whole album, but I am not too fond of this remix.

WHAT ABOUT THE MOONLIGHT?
Remix. I loved the original version, but don't care for this remix that much.

PARADISE IS HERE
Remix. This is the last remix on the album, and I'm glad because this one isn't anything special either...

THE SAME MISTAKE
This is a brilliant song. It's probably the best on the disc so far, because it's not a remix! I love this one, it's brilliant, and if you're a Cher fan, you can't deny that!

I'M BLOWIN' AWAY
Beautiful ballad.

WALKING IN MEMPHIS
Second single, following One By One. This is a brill track, and one of the best on the album, but this track should've been the opener, just like on the UK version.

THE SUN AIN'T GONNA SHINE ANYMORE
Absolutely awesome. Somebody (who I cannot remember) recorded this before Cher, and Cher's version is just excellent!

THE GUNMAN
A brilliant song. One of the best efforts on the whole album.

IT'S A MAN'S MAN'S MAN'S WORLD
Yet another awesome effort, and a brilliant closure!

Overall, the US edition of It's A Man's World is an OK effort, but if you want the better version, go for the UK edition. I'd give the original UK version 5 stars for definate, but gave this one 3 because: the US version is missing 3 songs (so I took away one star), and the remixes are rather dissapointing (so I took away another star). Verdict? Buy the UK edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the far superior British import, November 13, 2001
By
This review is from: It's a Man's World (Audio CD)
The folks at Warner Bros. here in the U.S. decided to doctor several of the original tracks on this, Cher's finest recording since 1975's Stars. In doing so, with cheesy synth beats, a beautifully produced and sung homage to male songwriters sounds cheap. By trying to bring the sound of It's a Man's World up to the minute, the geniuses involved forgot that the minute would pass before the CD was even released. The British import is the one to own. With three additional tracks, it's the whole album, with the original, and in all cases far superior, versions of five tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE BIG COMEBACK ALBUM, September 11, 1999

GREAT ALBUM. THE AMERICAN VERSION WAS RUINED BY CHANGING 5 SONGS AND LEAVING OFF THREE. IF THIS HAD BEEN RELEASED IN AMERICA SHE WOULD HAVE CAME BACK IN 1995 INSTEAD OF 1999!

Yes, you read it correctly. The season 5 episode titled "The Post-Modern Prometheus" has a character with a Cher fixation. Cher's music is played throughout the episode, including her wonderful version of "Walking in Memphis" and the Spector-ish, if I might, "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." Older material is also used as well as a Cher-prise at the end. It's one of The X-Files most poignant episodes and well worth your time...especially if you are a Cher fan.
