Book Description

July 6, 2006

In her trial by fire approach to motherhood, Mala Farmer offers us a humorously poetic look into life as a new mother. It's MOTHERHOOD...what'd YOU EXPECT? is a compilation of zany poems about the anticipation, surprises, and total chaos of new motherhood as seen through the eyes of mother, baby, and even the family pet. Whimsically illustrated by Cody Blair, the poems provide an off-the-wall look at pregnancy tests, unexpected body changes, poop, sleepless nights, play pens, pet jealousy, and more.

After forty years of preparation time and still being totally unprepared for motherhood, Ms. Farmer felt it only right to celebrate through poetry her initiation into the realm of new motherhood. As a seasoned professional in the field of international education, Ms. Farmer found herself on the receiving end of instruction from a six pound, six ounce teacher by the name of Nicolas.

It's MOTHERHOOD...WHAT'D YOU EXPECT? is a perfect gift for baby showers, Mother's Day, or for someone who just needs a lift.

About the Author

Mala Farmer, a native Texan with a wry sense of humor, is a teacher, singer, poetry and short story writer. She received her B.A. in Spanish and English from Stephen F. Austin State University and her M.Ed. in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University. Her career in education began with teaching English as a second Language to Asian refugees in Houston; however, life adventures and a strong desire to discover other cultures led her to work in Tampico, Mexico; Bogota, Colombia; and Pohnpei, Micronesia.

Discovering a passion for singing at the age of three, music has been a guiding force in Ms. Farmer's life. She has sung professionally in clubs, at conventions, weddings, and Texas barbecues, and not so professionally on Greyhound buses, in backyards, and, at age twenty, on Santa's lap in the mall. She currently sings with the Brazos Valley Chorale and the BVC Singers. Her most recent gig was singing back up for Barry Manilow in Houston, Texas on his 2002 tour.

Although she regards her career working with international students in Texas and abroad a major joy in her life, she considers her greatest accomplishment and adventure her becoming a first-time mother at the age of forty. An unparalleled educational experience, new motherhood impelled her to write IT'S MOTHERHOOD...WHAT'D YOU EXPECT?

Ms. Farmer is a Lecturer at the English Language Institute at Texas A&M University. She lives with her family in College Station, Texas.
