5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Finn's Little Bro with a Twist
I will never understand how talent like this gets overlooked. I fell in LOVE with this album with immediately. This probably has something to do with the fact Shane seems to be channeling Neil Finn's (formerly of Spilt Enz, Crowded House) voice, and Neil is my one of my all-time heros. Regardless of that, Shane has created this album, all by his lonesome, and has...

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy if you like Crowded House/Neil Finn
Nicholson's vocal similarity to Neil Finn (both solo and with Crowded House) is uncanny, and the song structures are similar, too. This is a good thing, if you're like me and can't get enough Crowded House/Finn. However, Nicholson's songs aren't quite as interesting---yet. The sound and the hooks are there, but there is a sameness to the songs that he never quite breaks...

I will never understand how talent like this gets overlooked. I fell in LOVE with this album with immediately. This probably has something to do with the fact Shane seems to be channeling Neil Finn's (formerly of Spilt Enz, Crowded House) voice, and Neil is my one of my all-time heros. Regardless of that, Shane has created this album, all by his lonesome, and has perfectly demonstrated that he is a singer/songwriter who can stand on his own merits. From start to finish this is a beautiful, warm and soothing CD. Casey Chambers gives Shane a hand with "Designed to Fade" and their voices work seamlessly together. I saw them both live (I found Shane's CD first and tracked down a show later) and they did not disappoint. Shane did a solo acoustic set and blew me away with his keen ability to convey what he recorded in the studio. Never having heard Casey before, I was pleasantly surprised with her talent as well. This is a MUST HAVE CD!

It is hard to describe how excellent this album is. There is definately a sameness quality- It's all GREAT!
Ignore the reviews that claim this album doesn't have enough variation...the variations are subtle and sublime. Genius....
If you love Crowded House/ Finn Bros. you must have this album...I am driving down the road with the sun coming up over the ocean...and LIFE IS A MOVIE with this album cranked up!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars a must buy for Neil Finn fans, February 15, 2004

To say that this is a must buy for Neil Finn fans is to shortchange Shane Nicholson, who has come up with an excellent album, but I'll still say it: if you like Neil Finn, you'll really like this. It has a charm and appeal of its own, is melodic, and enjoyable, and -- OK -- is pretty much guaranteed to appeal to any Neil Finn fans.

Wow! I'll bet Neil Finn might think he was listening to himself if he heard this CD following a bout with amnesia. Shane offers a great Finn and Teddy Thompson sound that although it sounds a lot like both of the aforementioned artists, he's still doing his own thing. How could a young Aussie grow up over the past 20 years and not have a bit of Neil Finn and Crowded House in his blood. We are what we know, and that's what helps shape us. This fabulous first effort is a prime example of just that. Also not surprised Shane toured as an opener for Alex Lloyd, another down under artist that makes me happy that good music is alive and well. This CD is a remarkable start for a young and talented singer/songwriter. Enjoy!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars exellent songwriting, vocals, January 31, 2004

If you like 'Life on Mars' - this man can write ! - on the slow tempoed end and 'I Wish I Was You' - in his mellow acoustic guitar based setting, this rocks - you'll grow into everything in between.
He settles into a beautiful groove on this CD with ringing clear acoustic guitar and a beautiful voice (reminiscent of early Jackson Browne, maybe even Squeeze lead vocalist)
He doesn't range too far from what he must be very comfortable in, which can mistaken for sameness on several tunes.

I'm not going to cludge up the beauty of this album with my feeble attempt to describe this wonderful artist/musician other than to say in the simplest of terms that Mr. Nicholson is a young man of immense talent! This is a collecction of songs of the highest caliber both in terms of the musical production rendering "catchy" yet lasting songs meshed with Shane's genius to scribe a song of poignant beauty in a simple yet most rewarding fashion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, October 7, 2004

Although I really like "Nice to be here", the rest of the songs sound pretty much the same. I like Neil Finn and Shane definitely has that sound, but maybe on his next album he will do something a bit different to break out of the monotony of this one.

The comparisons to Crowded House/Neil Finn are very accurate. Terrific album that won't disappoint.
