5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and rare, gender-neutral picture book
It's interesting that some reviewers identify the child as aboy, when the author has in fact written and illustratied this storyto be gender-neutral. The child (and animals, for that matter) can be either male or female -- and that was the author's intention, as described in a note in the book. When the main characters in so many children's books are male for no reason...

2.0 out of 5 stars Another children's book with poor English
This book has beautiful illustrations. The story is simple, few words on a page and repetitive - perfect for little readers. Unfortunately, it's another children's book written with poor English. Each page repeats the phrase, "I've got". The phrase is widely used in speech, but I expect better in my books.

The child (and animals, for that matter) can be either male or female -- and that was the author's intention, as described in a note in the book. When the main characters in so many children's books are male for no reason other than the fact that Male is the default gender in our world, how nice for girls to be able to see themselves in the main character of this story (and how nice for parents to not have to change names and pronouns to provide a more balanced perspective when reading to our children).

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, February 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: It's My Birthday (Paperback)
It is funny that the description of this book online says the main character is a boy, when in fact the author leaves the gender to be decided by the reader. My children (3 boys & 1 girl) love this book, and no one ever says anything about boy or girl. We have given this book many times as a birthday gift and have always had rave reviews for it. Highly reccommed for every house with children!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story and Beautiful Illustrations, December 19, 2011
This review is from: It's My Birthday (Paperback)
This is such a sweet book and the illustrations are calming and beautifully drawn. I never wondered about the gender as some reviewers have mentioned. I personally thought it was a girl to myself but never mentioned that to my children. I like that the author intended for the child and the animals to be gender neutral.

My children really enjoyed this book and it was a joy for me to read it to them. The illustrations really make all the difference. And I like that the story line is a little reminiscent of The Little Red Hen (with a happy ending for all) or Stone Soup. I'd highly recommend this book and will consider giving this as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great choice, give as a 1st birthday gift, July 2, 2002

This review is from: It's My Birthday (Hardcover)
We checked this book out so many times at the library, we bought copies for us and to give as birthday gifts. Sweet story about cooperation of making cake and celebrating! I love Helen Oxenbury's soft watercolor illustrations - another great choice is "Going on a Bear Hunt"

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: It's My Birthday (Hardcover)
Unfortunately, I never received the package. This is a book I have been searching for since 2007 in hard back. My child borrowed this book from our local library and loved this story so much that I decided to purchase the book. This is a very hard book to find since it is out of print. The only satisfication is that the seller was very professional, prompt and gave me a refund for the amount of the book. I would purchase from this seller again since they were so professional. It appeared the package was lost in the US Postal system. From now on I will use UPS or another carrier that can easily track packages. I do hope the seller will inform me when this book is available again.
