4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MAYNARD, February 16, 2005

This is a fantastic Maynard Ferguson album. I remember when it came out during my college years in 1980. My dad was a huge Ferguson fan and have gotten everything from New Vintage onward. The two tracks that give the band its excellent status are "Red Creek" and "Spirit of St Frederick" - great arrangements and playing. "Everybody Loves the Blues" is also outstanding. I have always liked the title cut that some dismiss as to "discoish". I love this album and was glad to see it come out on CD. I agree with all who wish for the MF Horn series to come out on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A totally under estimated album, October 29, 2004
This review is from: It's My Time (Audio CD)
Ok first of all I have been a Maynard fan since I first heard the blistering "Live at Jimmys" version of MacArthur Park in junior high school and was hooked immediatley. It's My Time in my opinion is a great album that alot of people have dismissed because Maynard isn't in his "bebop jazz mode" persay. I bought this album when it came out after hearing "You can have me anytime" and found the album as a whole to be more than satisfying on every song. anyone who truly appreciates Maynards range as a trumpeter as well as his (in my opinion) best horn section ever including Stan Mark his Ace lead man, should have this CD. I also see this album as a tribute to Maynards drummer for this album, Roberto Petraccia who sadly passed away not long after it's release. Thank You for reading this and a BIG THANK YOU to the people who finally relased more of Maynards best work on CD!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Album, January 18, 2005

This is a pretty obscure Columbia release, besides M.F. Horn/3. I really liked this dance/disco LP. It only gets one track on the compilation album "The Essence Of Maynard Ferguson." for the cut "Everybody Loves The Blues." What I thought was really interesting was the track, "An Offering Of Love (Part 1)." This is a pretty neat track to listen to. This album is worth owning. I really wish they would release "M.F. Horn 4 and 5, Live At Jimmy's" on CD!!!!!

I was introduced to this album by a fellow trumpet player when I was at the US Armed Forces School of Music, in Littlecreek, Virginia. At the time the lab bands rehearsed the tune "The Spirit of St. Frederick" from time to time, and once I heard the "real deal" I was hooked. This cassette was a staple of my Maynard listening until it came up missing (I think my wife actually threw it away - as a non-musician she wasn't exactly a fan of MF) and I was really pleased when I found this album available on CD. I don't listen to it as much as I used to, but it's on my iPod and I pull it up several times a year and run it through its paces for a day or two. It might not be quite up to where the MF Horn and MF Horn II albums were, but any serious Maynard fan should have it in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars almost totally Pop, but totally cool, November 8, 2009

If you decry maynard's transition into Pop format from his glory days of bop, you are no doubt prepared to hate this album. But this unique album demonstrates a lot of talent and some great arranging. The selections are far from standard MF fare, even from his Pop phase, making this a unique album, and one that if taken for what it is, will be a nice addition to any MF collection. Personally, I find this a very enjoyable album that I appreciate more the longer I own it. An interesting and engaging departure for the Old Man.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maynard Hits the '80s!!!, August 20, 2008

Maynard was unstoppable in the '70s. One terrific album after another. It's My Time followed, if I recall correctly, Hot, which featured the forgettable Rocky II Disco track. Look, I didn't like disco then and I don't like it today, which leads me to my only criticism of It's My Time, which is well, the title track. Too disco-sounding. Other than that a greeat album. I remember being particularly struck by An Offering of Love, Part I. If he ever did Part II please let me know, for believe it or not I don't have all of Maynard's albums!
It's a great pleasure for me to be able to go back thirty years and more and write reviews of Maynard Ferguson. Maynard loved going on the road. He even came to my high school and the local jazz fest! Always a terrific show and a great guy who could make you feel like a long-lost friend. I'm sad that he's gone but then he never will be, as long as we continue to enjoy and share his music! By all means share Maynard with your kids. One of these days I'm going to start collecting his pre-'70s stuff, which many tell me is more pure jazz than the Maynard I came up on. I'll let y'all know what I think!
