Fun song, though barely resembles later Young and James,
By Shelly Gill (Savannah, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's My Time (MP3 Download)
The above review seems to be a compilation of trivia gathered from around the web but isn't really helpful if you're wondering about the song, itself. "It's My Time" has a vintage, mid-sixties sound and appeal to it, not resembling much of anything we know Neil Young and Rick James for in their later respective work. The comparison to the Rolling Stones (made on several other websites) comes perhaps because the tempo and melody is not unlike those in the Stones' "Get Off of My Cloud." James isn't yet singing in his 'funk' style that made him famous, but more of an R&B/pop style typical of the day. Young can vaguely be heard among the backing vocals, but hardly stands out. Something in the melody line which I can't quite put my finger on, does indeed sound familiar to elements of later Young compositions, though you would never put one and one together and realize he co-wrote this song if you didn't already know it. A fun, peppy tune, though, if you like mid-sixties pop/rock.

The Mynah Birds were an early Motown entry into the rock genre featuring Ricky James Matthews (later known as Rick James), Neil Young and Bruce Palmer (the latter two just before they joined Buffalo Springfield). "It's My Time" was written by James and Young and features lead vocals by James doing his best Mick Jagger impersonation. The song is about a man determined to love a woman that is brushing him off. It surely would have been a hit, but just prior to its planned release in 1966, Rick James was busted for going AWOL from the US Navy, effectively ending the group. Rick James would later return to Motown in the 1970s to much success. This track is well worth the price of the download for its curiosity value alone. Fans of Rick James, the Stones and Neil Young will especially get a kick out of this track.
