Editorial Reviews

Review

ENTERTAINING AND HONEST "Olsen has a flair for presenting serious topics with a humorous twist and for approaching them from a different angle than her readers might expect. Chapters end with incite-ful questions certain to rouse discussion in groups, or provoke some serious reflection for the individual reader." - CBA Retailers Magazine

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff for early in your walk with Christ January 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
As a middle-aged man, I don't fit the demographic for whom this book was written, but I know Christian women who do, and I shared a copy of this book with one of them. In going through the book, I found that it was smoothly written and engaging, even though Rachel Olsen's allusions to pop culture sometimes sound forced to me. For example, the major premise of the book is that there are "divine secrets" of the "Yahweh sisterhood" -- and if that's not a blindingly obvious riff on bestselling fiction by Rebecca Wells and Dan Brown, then my name is Matilda.

On the other hand, there's no law against a writer having fun with her own work. As my friend pointed out, Rachel Olsen is a trustworthy guide for any Christian woman who wants to approach Jesus humming that old hymn, "Just a closer walk with Thee". Moreover, Olsen is up front about the irony in revealing divine truths that can hardly be called hidden if you know where to look: "The secrets contained in the pages of this book are nothing new or hidden at all. They've all been wrapped within the Word of God and the person of Christ for thousands of years, readily accessible through the ages," she writes. Olsen, in other words, is no Gnostic. She's a woman writing warmly in the Reformed Christian tradition for postmodern peers who want advice from the best possible source (scripture) mediated through her own experience.

I would have appreciated additional perspective from formidable women like Catherine of Siena or Teresa of Avila, but that's more of an observation than a criticism (I did say that I wasn't in the target demographic for this book).

What Rachel Olsen does in this book is done very well. She shows how God is both majestic and accessible, and writes movingly about how the lessons of scripture (still) apply to our lives. This book will never be recommended by Oprah Winfrey, but I daresay it will prove helpful for those to whom it is written, not least the author's own daughter.

Wow! This was a powerful book without being too preachy! Rachel Olsen really knows who to talk about struggles, failures and everything in between without offending her readers, and by including them in the book. How does she include them? Well, from page one she captures the readers attention and draws them in. Now, it's not a fiction book, nor is it really a self help book. It's a book for women by a woman that helps you reconnect. Reconnect with whom, you ask? Well, it's a reconnection with yourself, a reconnection with God and a reconnection with others. It shows you that it's okay to do things like accept help from others, and don't over exhaust your self with your day to day problems. Let go and give it to God. Complete with places to make notes after reading the suggested scriptures, Rachel Olsen knows what women need and want. Read it alone. Read it with a friend. Either way, this 5 star book by Rachel Olsen will open your heart, mind and eyes to secrets that only the Bible can hold. Secrets that will transform you but make you happy in the end. Don't delay. I totally loved, loved, loved this book!! Once I opened it, I couldn't put it down! Rachel is so down to earth and REAL about her struggles and failures, that it felt like she was writing my story. I really loved the chapter called, "Turn the Beat Around". She talks about truly resting on the Sabbath, and what it means to really trust the Lord by resting.
There are Bible study questions at the end of each chapter to help you dig deeper for yourself into the decoder ring that God has given us in Christ. This book is a MUST for any Bible study group, and I know it's on the list for the 'next do" in my group!
