Book Description

March 20, 2012
A forty-year-old cheerleader? When Laura Vikmanis, a single mom in Ohio, told friends that she wanted to be an NFL cheerleader, they said it would never happen. But she proved them all wrong. . . .

Laura Vikmanis has got spirit . . . and pom-poms, too! But before she stepped onto the field as the oldest cheerleader in the National Football League, she was sidelined by a bad marriage and the many responsibilities of stay-at-home motherhood. She finally got the courage to leave her husband and to ask herself something she had never asked before: What do I want to do? Remembering her teenage love of dance, she signed up for a pole-dancing fitness class, where she met a former cheerleader for the Cincinnati Bengals. When the woman suggested that Laura audition to be a “Ben-Gal,” Laura laughed her off but soon realized that the audition process could be a way of healing herself—and regaining her confidence. Her boots were made for walking—but also for stomping on a football field.

She tried out for the team next to girls young enough to be her daughters. Girls with tighter abs, fuller hair, no kids, and no crow’s-feet. After much adversity and multiple auditions, she finally made the team, becoming the oldest cheerleader in the League.

It’s Not About the Pom-Poms follows Laura’s inspiring, funny, and eye-opening journey from demoralized divorcée to high-kicking Cincinnati Ben-Gal. Readers will cheer her on as she rediscovers her passion for dancing, takes hip-hop classes with twelve-year-olds, loses twenty-five pounds, discovers her abs, finds love again, and becomes a new kind of role model to her daughters. Laura also provides an inside look into the fascinating world of NFL cheerleaders—the grueling workouts, bad pay, twice-weekly weigh-ins, but, most important, the lifelong bond between the women, who do it all for the glory.

Leading with her heart, Laura Vikmanis faces adversity with her head held high as she learns in mid-life to take a flying leap. Powerful and uplifting, It’s Not About the Pom-Poms shows that, no matter your age, it’s never too late to go, fight, and win!

Review

Advance praise for It’s Not About the Pom-Poms

“Laura Vikmanis allowed herself to dream big, and after setbacks and opposition, she achieved that dream: becoming a Cincinnati Ben-Gal cheerleader. Even those of us who have never wanted to be a cheerleader will be thrilled by Laura’s passionate pursuit—and accomplishment—of her goal.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Happiness Project

“Laura Vikmanis’s story is engaging and wildly empowering. It’s Not About the Pom-Poms gives new meaning to the term ‘second act.’ It makes you want to get up off your couch and go, fight, win!”—Julie Klam, bestselling author of You Had Me at Woof and Love at First Bark

5.0 out of 5 stars It IS About the Pom Pom's March 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was so excited to read this book - even before Yahoo picked up this story - I had seen Laura's profile on the Ben Gals page and was inspired that she a NFL cheerleader in her 40s. Especially since I'm a religious watcher of DCC - Making the Team and the judges seem to make fun of the older women that try out for the squad - even humiliating them by posting "Old School" montages of their auditions.

Despite loving the insight she gave to life on a squad - my favorite part of this book was that Laura was rejected from her first audition attempt - like many prospective NFL cheerleaders. Instead of wallowing in self pity and blaming her age as a reason for not making the squad, she picked herself up, took hip hop classes with teens, ramped up her work outs, tried out again and made it.

Wonderful inspirational book for anyone who wants to reach a goal and go for that childhood dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Story March 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I enjoyed this memoir that describes Laura Vikmanis' journey to rebuild her life after a devastating marriage and divorce by pursuing a dream that she had given up on as a young woman. I love second-chance stories and stories about people challenging the status quo, and it's certainly challenging to get out there and try out for professional cheerleading, an activity that is traditionally "reserved" for younger people. Vikmanis takes us through her early childhood and teenage/college years, and then describes her marriage to an abusive man, plus the effect that marriage had on her self-esteem and her ability to live the life she wanted to live. She then explains how she became interested in trying out for the Ben-Gals, the grueling tryout process, and the details on what it is like to be a professional cheerleader, particularly one who is older than most. We also learn about her relationships with her teammates and the pressure she faces as a cheerleader (appearance requirements, including weight requirements, the necessary time commitment, and the strict rules she is required to follow to remain on the team).

Overall, I thought the story was inspiring. Cheerleading was never my thing, but I really liked the inside look at professional cheerleading and the brief history of cheerleading that Vikmanis provides. There were also some funny moments, such as when Vikmanis found herself taking a hip-hop class entirely with scornful twelve-year olds. Additionally, I liked reading about how Vikmanis was able to completely transform her life and how even though being a professional cheerleader is grueling, the benefits she receives from it make it all worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Even for Guys March 29, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book will obviously strike a note with female readers who will appreciate the inspirational message of the story. Even though most women won't become NFL cheerleaders, the story transcends the sports setting and can motivate anyone to become the best version of themselves. Guys will also appreciate the story and admire this gutsy gal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and a fine kick in the booty! February 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I would say this woman accomplished something that seemed undoable. It may not seem profound that a 40 year old woman tackled her dream of becoming a NFL cheerleader but when you consider what she was up against in our tweaked and youth skewed beauty culture I would beg to differ. When you read Laura's story you really see that she turned her life around 180 degrees from what was a pretty stagnant and unhealthy existence to one where she achieved something pretty awesome. It definitely gives you some perspective on deciding what you really want and dedicating yourself to truly go after it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for parents of daughters January 23, 2013
Format:Hardcover
This is a beautiful coming of age... no, coming to LIFE... story of a young woman growing into her own. This is a MUST READ for any MAN that intends to have daughters, or date someone's daughter. Well-written, and engaging... I found myself getting angry at parts, sad in others, but ultimately uplifted as this delightful story unfolds. Ms. Laura Vikmanis shares a very powerful story of learning to live and love after an unfilfulling and emotionally abusive relationship. In sharing her story, she gives voice to a plight shared by far too many women - the feeling of being trapped in an unfulfilling marriage, staying because of the loss of self-worth. I will be recommending this story to all the Mothers and Fathers I know, so that more parents are better informed of the challenges women often face and to help increase their sensitivity to how even seemingly small actions in our lives can often create ripples that turns into crashing waves in the lives of our children.

I work primarily with families and children, and I've seen first hand how the patterns of parents often play out in the lives of their children - in my students as young as 3 and in my students as young as 60+, too!
