Biography

From its foundation as a Puritan colony in 1630, to the ban on William S. Burroughs’ groundbreaking The Naked Lunch during the free-wheeling ‘60s, Boston has a long, proud tradition of suppressing freedom of expression. Yet it has also nurtured some of our nation’s most provocative individuals: Donna Summer, the Pixies, Edgar Allen Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Editorial Reviews

This is Cross's second album for Sub Pop, and is the follow-up to 2002's Grammy-nominated "Shut Up You Fucking Baby!" On this specially priced disc, Cross continues to skewer everyone and everything in his path. "A truth teller in the noble tradition of Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, and Lenny Bruce...as urgent and outraged as a Noam Chomsky lecture, but infinitely more entertaining"--The Onion.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Quite Funny (AKA The Terrorists Hate Our Freedom) September 26, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I purchased this CD about a month and a half ago with an extensive, albeit Mr. Show inspired knowledge of David Cross' comedy. I'd seen a couple of comedy specials he'd done for HBO, so I sorta expected him to do a couple of skits and what-not. Man was I blown away when I heard this CD. This guy is hi-larious. His comments on politics, the war, religion and other socially relevant topics are not only remarkably prescient, but hysterically made. He skewers the right and Bush for their homophobia, hypocrisy and hatred. His rendition of Trent Lott going on BET is hysterical. If you buy any comedy CD this year, this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Research before you complain! July 9, 2004
By Todd
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD in Boulder CO and listened to it on my way back home... and it was hilarious. Absolutely hilarious...
For the people who have decided to write negative reviews and bash this cd, I respect your opinions, EXCEPT THAT MANY OF YOU ADMIT TO NEVER HAVING LISTENED TO THE CD! How does one complain before you know what you're complaining about?
Additionally, I also cannot stand the complaints about him getting 'off God's path' because he is an Atheist. There is no grand joyous design to him, and furthermore, he was born Jewish. So exactly what would be wrong with Jesus bashing even if he was still religious?
I rest my case.
This is a fine follow up to his earlier album, and I'm sure there are many more hilarious ones to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cd, even greater reviews!! May 22, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Being a huge David Cross fan, I thoroughly enjoyed his cd, which is hilariously insightful, and sometimes just plain hilarious.
But I also really enjoyed reading some of the reviews posted on Amazon.com, which keep up with the spirit that is David Cross' comedic style.
If you're at all familiar with David Cross' approach to comedy, it should be OBVIOUS that reviews such as "David Cross will burn in Hell!! , "Where does David Cross get off", and "Big Christian Big Fan" (among others) were written in sarcastic jest by huge David Cross fans. As I read these reviews, I laughed so hard I cried.
Yet some people have apparently missed the point, notably "mayostard", who took offense to a reviewer's claim that Pres. Bush would never lie...even though it was obviously sarcastic (said reviewer wrote that he/she was from "The Great Progressive State of Mississippi" a direct QUOTE from David Cross' cd!)
I could undesrtand some people not "getting it" if they are unacquainted with David Cross, but to claim that you're a fan, and STILL not get that "So, David Cross thinks it's funny to make fun of religion, and our President, one of the smartest, most intelligentest, best smelling presidents we've ever had " is sarcastic (come on!!! best smelling!!!)is just dumb.
So, kudos to all you comedian reviewers. You're what make being a Cross fan so much fun. And to anyone who took what they said seriously: listen to David Cross' cd about 10 times, watch all episodes of Mr Show, and THEN reread the reviews. If you still don't get it, well, may you be forced to listen to Creed cds for all eternity while watching The Simple Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't... stop... laughing July 4, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album was in my Amazon recomendation, so I decided to check out the reviews. Now, I'm not a big fan of stand-up comedy, but if this album makes me laugh half as much as these reviews do, then this may the best CD... ever.
Lets begin:
"I don't think God likes this...,"
Well I happen to be a good friend of ol' Yahweh, and he's loves comedy. Who are you to say what he likes and dislikes, blasphemer?
"When Mr. Cross started in saying he'd rather hear the death rattle of his only child rather than the sublime sounds of Creed I immediately turned off the CD and burst into tears."
Burst into tears? Because some jerk you don't even know insulted Creed? Or perhaps its the joke about his only child dying, well to be fair, that kid is a brat.
"DAVID CROSS WILL BURN IN HELL!!!!!!!!!"
I hope that this review is a joke; as it is quite funny. G.W. Bush is the "best smelling president we've ever had"? I have always thought that he wears a bit too much Aquavelva, but that's just me.
"Our President would NEVER lie to his people, he knows it's a sin to lie!"
An american president lie?? Life as we know it would cease to be! No... I mean the exact opposite of that, life would continue as it has with every other politician telling bald-face lies.
Oh no... I think that I've written a review of the reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great political comic June 18, 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
David Cross ranks right up there with Chris Rock and Lewis Black as one of the country's funniest political comics. Taking on some of his favorite topics such as the Bush administration, religion and racism, Cross absolutely pulls no punches. He isn't afraid to offend people, and in fact probably feels like he's accomplished something if he does offend. There are undoubtedly quite a few people who would be turned off by his abrasive style, but for the rest of us his sense of rage is electrifying. This CD obviously doesn't provide as much material as his previous 2-disc set, but the quality of the material is easily on par with his earlier material (and a bit more timely, too). If you're a fan, GET THIS CD. If you're not a fan yet, buy it and hopefully you will be.
