5.0 out of 5 stars It's Quite Funny (AKA The Terrorists Hate Our Freedom)
I purchased this CD about a month and a half ago with an extensive, albeit Mr. Show inspired knowledge of David Cross' comedy. I'd seen a couple of comedy specials he'd done for HBO, so I sorta expected him to do a couple of skits and what-not. Man was I blown away when I heard this CD. This guy is hi-larious. 3.0 out of 5 stars Cross is great, but this follow-up is mediocre
David Cross is one of the most unpredictable, organic-sounding comics today. He improvises entire shows and clearly despises the played-out stand up tradition of one-liner/two-liner "joke telling." His rambling style is a strength as well as a liability; every performance is unique and varied, but segments sometimes run long and fail to keep up the momentum for serious...

His comments on politics, the war, religion and other socially relevant topics are not only remarkably prescient, but hysterically made. He skewers the right and Bush for their homophobia, hypocrisy and hatred. His rendition of Trent Lott going on BET is hysterical. If you buy any comedy CD this year, this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Research before you complain!, July 9, 2004

I bought this CD in Boulder CO and listened to it on my way back home... and it was hilarious. Absolutely hilarious...

For the people who have decided to write negative reviews and bash this cd, I respect your opinions, EXCEPT THAT MANY OF YOU ADMIT TO NEVER HAVING LISTENED TO THE CD! How does one complain before you know what you're complaining about?

Additionally, I also cannot stand the complaints about him getting 'off God's path' because he is an Atheist. There is no grand joyous design to him, and furthermore, he was born Jewish. So exactly what would be wrong with Jesus bashing even if he was still religious?

I rest my case.

This is a fine follow up to his earlier album, and I'm sure there are many more hilarious ones to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cd, even greater reviews!!, May 22, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Not Funny (Audio CD)
Being a huge David Cross fan, I thoroughly enjoyed his cd, which is hilariously insightful, and sometimes just plain hilarious.
But I also really enjoyed reading some of the reviews posted on Amazon.com, which keep up with the spirit that is David Cross' comedic style.
If you're at all familiar with David Cross' approach to comedy, it should be OBVIOUS that reviews such as "David Cross will burn in Hell!! , "Where does David Cross get off", and "Big Christian Big Fan" (among others) were written in sarcastic jest by huge David Cross fans. As I read these reviews, I laughed so hard I cried.
Yet some people have apparently missed the point, notably "mayostard", who took offense to a reviewer's claim that Pres. Bush would never lie...even though it was obviously sarcastic (said reviewer wrote that he/she was from "The Great Progressive State of Mississippi" a direct QUOTE from David Cross' cd!)
I could undesrtand some people not "getting it" if they are unacquainted with David Cross, but to claim that you're a fan, and STILL not get that "So, David Cross thinks it's funny to make fun of religion, and our President, one of the smartest, most intelligentest, best smelling presidents we've ever had " is sarcastic (come on!!! best smelling!!!)is just dumb.
So, kudos to all you comedian reviewers. You're what make being a Cross fan so much fun. And to anyone who took what they said seriously: listen to David Cross' cd about 10 times, watch all episodes of Mr Show, and THEN reread the reviews. If you still don't get it, well, may you be forced to listen to Creed cds for all eternity while watching The Simple Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't... stop... laughing, July 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Not Funny (Audio CD)
This album was in my Amazon recomendation, so I decided to check out the reviews. Now, I'm not a big fan of stand-up comedy, but if this album makes me laugh half as much as these reviews do, then this may the best CD... ever.

Lets begin:

"I don't think God likes this...,"
Well I happen to be a good friend of ol' Yahweh, and he's loves comedy. Who are you to say what he likes and dislikes, blasphemer?

"When Mr. Cross started in saying he'd rather hear the death rattle of his only child rather than the sublime sounds of Creed I immediately turned off the CD and burst into tears."

Burst into tears? Because some jerk you don't even know insulted Creed? Or perhaps its the joke about his only child dying, well to be fair, that kid is a brat.

"DAVID CROSS WILL BURN IN HELL!!!!!!!!!"

I hope that this review is a joke; as it is quite funny. G.W. Bush is the "best smelling president we've ever had"? I have always thought that he wears a bit too much Aquavelva, but that's just me.

"Our President would NEVER lie to his people, he knows it's a sin to lie!"

An american president lie?? Life as we know it would cease to be! No... I mean the exact opposite of that, life would continue as it has with every other politician telling bald-face lies.

Oh no... I think that I've written a review of the reviews.

I'll keep this short and sweet. Its so funny that I don't even want to laugh. I'm afraid I wont be able to hear the next thing he says. I just stand there making this "CKCKCKKCKCCKKCSCHSCHSCHSCH" noise until I cant hold it n any longer and I'm certainly not the only one in the room doing that. Just dont buy it expecting any high energy. He doesn't really get very pumped up. He is just so dead-on. He kind of reminds me of Tenacious D (Jack Black & Kyle Gass), just low key and funny as all heck. Buy it. BUY IT NOW!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great political comic, June 18, 2004

David Cross ranks right up there with Chris Rock and Lewis Black as one of the country's funniest political comics. Taking on some of his favorite topics such as the Bush administration, religion and racism, Cross absolutely pulls no punches. He isn't afraid to offend people, and in fact probably feels like he's accomplished something if he does offend. There are undoubtedly quite a few people who would be turned off by his abrasive style, but for the rest of us his sense of rage is electrifying. This CD obviously doesn't provide as much material as his previous 2-disc set, but the quality of the material is easily on par with his earlier material (and a bit more timely, too). If you're a fan, GET THIS CD. If you're not a fan yet, buy it and hopefully you will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Christian, Big Fan, May 14, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: It's Not Funny (Audio CD)
If there's one thing I love in this world, it's Christ. If there's two things I love in this world, it's Christ and David Cross's jokes! (If there's a third thing, it's my mocha-frappuccinos, but don't tell Weight Watchers!) But seriously, if you like good, clean, God-fearing comedy, this is the album for you. He does this one "bit" (or "joke") about the twelve apostles being like a professional basketball team that had me and the Mrs. in stitches -- I had to pull the Expedition over for fear of a wreck!

What's great is that David can do "edgy" religious material without offending Our Lord -- like the one he does about Heaven being like a really big picnic, except the mayonnaise never goes bad. Where does he get this stuff?! This CD is a treat for anyone with a good, Christian heart and a sense of humor (sense of humor not included! ;-)). What would Jesus do? He'd buy this album... AND LAUGH! Praise the Lord, Praise David Cross and God Bless America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just because you like comedy doesn't mean you're good at it., July 31, 2004

OK, of course this album is great but when the hell did people
decide that due to the fact that they like comedy that they should attempt it in a review on Amazon? Virtually none of these reviews are even worth a smirk and really you all should leave it to the people who are good at it.
To give you a comparison - just because you happen to listen to
The Who doesn't mean you should attempt to do the guitar windmill like Pete Townshend. Enjoy it, but don't try to emulate it. You just end up looking like the drunk goofball at the show that's air guitaring.
On a side note, if you like facts, humor and sense in your outlook on life then this album is a great addition to what you already feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contains Great Political Satire, May 24, 2004
By
Scott McFarland (Manassas, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's Not Funny (Audio CD)
I was at one of the shows recorded here, and my impression of the show that night matches my impression of this disc. It is, in part, brilliant. Specifically, when Cross is doing "political" material or material that relates to the flaws in our society and culture. When he moves away to other topics/areas, he becomes more ordinary and at times just irritating. He should not run from a reputation as a political satirist, he should embrace it - the better half of this material is phenomenal, as was his 2002 album to an even greater degree. He is an effective storyteller as well, but as a stand-up his desire to irritate and offend works best when he is railing against the villain that is right-wing America.

Tracks 3, 7, and 8 are probably the highlights here and if you're a thinking person who shares Cross' disgust with the afore-mentioned right-wing America you will probably laugh until you hemmorage. Cross at his best is like Bill Maher or AL Franken with more bite and anger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, May 9, 2004
This review is from: It's Not Funny (Audio CD)
Because it's one of the most pleasing comedy albums I've ever bought, from perhaps the most promising comedian of this generation. After buying his last album (over 2 hours long and VERY well worth picking up in addition to this release), I emitted a little a little "Hell yeah!" upon seeing I'd moseyed into the local CD boutique and saw a modest poster advertising the release and rushed over to the comedy section to secure my copy (sadly, they were all sold out of Rock Against Bush Vol. 1, which would couple this nicely).

Listening to David's latest album, a number of this struck me awed that did not from his previous works. The most major of which is that he did not repeat ANY of the material from his massive last album, which is uncanny with most comic albums. Usually with concerts released within a few years of each other, the best jokes will pop up and overlap. Not here.

The other thing that amazed me was how much more fluent his speaking and segues were. David's style of stand-up is the self-admitted "drunken-ramble", in which he stands on stage with a beer in hand and just talks. On his first CD, there were a lot of static "y'know"s and "um"s, but much less so here. Maybe he wasn't drinking as much, maybe he had a better planned set, but whatever the case, it feels like he's sitting with you at a bar having a conversation. This is very admirable and makes the album feel more personable than some other comics'.

The material now is in a similar vein as his other stuff. Stupid people, racism, new products ("THERE'S GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY!!"), and, of course politics. I might get lynched for saying this, but I think I see another Bill Hicks budding in this bespeckled man. His political views are harsh, somewhat conspiritorial, and always witty and cunning. Oh, and backed by facts. David's a very smart man and researches his material carefully. Unlike a certain government he admonishes about thier terrorisms detectoring skills. Nearly everything had me in stitches, even his non-sequitors and improvised material.

(My favorite bit on the whole CD was when a fan invited him to a concert, to which David replies, "I've got to stay in my hotel cut out up a few newspapers. A recipe for brown betty, a really funny "Family Circus". P.J. Mispronounces 'spaghetti'. He calls it 'pasketti' and -- get this -- he calles 'meatballs' 'meatBULBS'!! That's why it's going up on the fridge!" The whole thing came off the top of his head and is so fluid and seriously-delivered it slays.)

Also of note is that the CD contains a newspaper article about a Howard Dean benefit for which several anti-Bush comics performed. The article is biased and slanted (the reporter obviously is a member of the GOP) and David annotates it with clarity, cutting through the rhetoric and lies with grace and humor. A very nice touch.

If you liked this CD, try David's previous release "SHUT UP, YOU (Naughty Word) BABY!", Bill Hicks's "Rant in E-Minor", or Dennis Miller's "The White Album" (before he became Bush's pony boy). Vice versa, if you liked any of the above albums or comics, try this release.

If you DIDN'T like it ... well, perhaps you should be concentrating on the economy and the gas-prices so high that one would think it was Yahweh's sweat, Mr. President.
