It's Not Just About Skiing..., December 16, 2007
This review is from: It's Not Just About Skiing: The Best of Forte Records So Far (Audio CD)
No...it's about some really kickin' tunes as well.
Think of some of the groups who have come out of Germany in recent history: rockers Placebo have garnered much fame and acclaim, what with releasing a collection of singles and more recently a new album; world famous DJ and mix legend Timo Maas also has made a name for himself, both in the underground dance scene and the mainstream, with three mix albums full of his own takes on other artist's hits plus studio-built hits like 'To Get Down' from his first album of original material, 'Loud' (which can be heard in several television advertisements); the lesser-known artists such as Alpinestars and Codec and Flexor have won some love as well from DJs and educated music aficianados, like myself, each having two full-length albums to their credit; and most recently newcomers Trick and Kubic released the instant club favorite 'Easy' found on many mix CDs. Then there's Christian Morgenstern...dark House artist and music producer. The forerunning artist on the little-known label 'Forte Records'. Evidently, there are just a few on the label, but Christian has been making records since 1994 (there is a bit of info and history of some of the tracks on this CD). When I checked this out, I recognized his name from Codec and Flexor's albums, as he is their producer.
This was one of the records that popped up when I was checking their page here one day. I was excited about it because of the two non-album tracks by Codec and Flexor, having previously acquired both of their CDs (through amazon) and being blown away by the sheer excitement and greatness fully applied to both. I was surprised this existed for one thing, and if you've ever searched for C&F in stores, you understand why. The closest any mainstream music distributor could get was selling Ladytron's 'Softcore Jukebox' with 'Crazy Girls' on it. I did happen to see their first at HMV (in CANADA!) and their second at the Virgin Megastore in Chicago, after having already ordered it. This product here was a huge surprise.
There are several tracks by Christian from his early album and even earlier singles and EPs and some others I've not heard of such as Ural 13 Diktators and Ronny Priest. There are also a few tracks of their's remixed by Alter Ego, Johannes Heil, and DMX Krew (not DMX the rapper). All the tracks on this are great, which is something that you never get with mix CDs, much less one full of people you're not familiar with. I took a chance on it because I knew what C&F sound like and I figured their producer would sound similar on his own. He doesn't sound a lot like them, more like the darker House tracks heard on 'Music For The Maases', but he has his own smooth beat and rhythm. A few of these are more on the creepy side like 'Death Before Disko' remixed by Ural 13 Diktators and their own track 'Total Destruction'. They pick up the pace of the album toward the end. There is a consistent dark House vibe throughout most of the album, with a few Electro elements here and there and a fast Trance-House track to finish it off. All in all a huge success and a great compilation, one that has not left the player since I got it a couple of weeks ago. Definitely check this one out! It is truly sweet stuff!
Stand-Out parts include: the ethereal breaks of 'Aces High', the rolling basslines of 'Little Green Apples', the otherworldly 'Baxter's Mind', the pure electro-house vibes of 'Steigreider'-Alter Ego remix, and the bumpin' danciness of 'Death Before Disko'-Ural 13 Diktators remix-all by Christian Morgenstern; Codec and Flexor's 'Crazy Girls'-Crazy Edit and 'Breakout'; and Ural 13 Diktators' 'Total Destruction'-Original and Johannes Heil remix. All tracks continuously mixed by Maral Salmassi. Booklet includes snippets of Forte's history, pictures of posters, records, and artists, and a collage of photos (one of Codec and Flexor). Very Cool! Cool artwork on front and back. Very Clever!
